On June 16, 2025 it's that time again: The Hofgarten in Potsdam invites you to the summer obelisk festival. Under the direction of Dorothea Schüttmund, the chairman of the “Friends of the Potsdamer Cabaret Obelisk e.V.” association, guests can experience a diverse and colorful event. In times when the financial situation of Potsdam's cultural landscape is tense, the importance of memberships and donations in supporting the cabaret is particularly emphasized.
The summer festival is not only for entertainment, but also to support the obelisk. The proceeds from a cake bazaar go directly to financially supporting the cabaret. But that's not all: the club recently purchased a new lighting system and an electric piano to further improve the technical conditions. There is also the option of donating 200 euros to provide a new chair for the indoor seating, with the donor's name being immortalized for five years. This is a great opportunity to get actively involved in promoting cultural diversity in the city.
Cultural program in the summer garden
On the day of the festival, visitors can look forward to a varied program. Members of the regular crew, including Andreas Zieger, Helmut Fensch, Bella Liere and Lutz Andres, present samples from their current pieces “Merz also has nice days” and “Better sex after six than five to twelve”. The ensemble not only shows musical diversity, but also masters well-known hits, from Beatles songs to Andrea Berg.
In addition to these performances, Thomas Nicolai from Leipzig provides additional entertainment with his boomer comedy, which presents well-known pop hits in a new lyrical guise. The comedian will be on Friday, June 20, 2025 at 7:30 p.m. with his new program "Mit Alles! Extrascharf!" perform in the courtyard garden.
Promoting the cultural scene
The support association, which was founded in 1991, is committed to an important goal: supporting the work of cabaret as an essential part of the cultural landscape in Potsdam. The regular productions of the in-house ensemble and the technical equipment benefit significantly from membership fees and donations. Every member can enjoy benefits, including the current schedule in advance and the opportunity to purchase tickets before the official start of advance sales.
The Federal cultural administration supports projects of national importance to preserve cultural heritage and strengthen the cultural scene. This is done through collaboration with institutions and authorities that are committed to promoting art and culture. Regardless of the financial difficulties, the promotion of the Obelisk cabaret and similar institutions remains an important aspect of the cultural landscape.
