Eberswalde breaks a record: the longest rollator chain in the world!
Last Saturday, June 22, 2024, Eberswalde in Barnim made a remarkable attempt to go down in the history books. The longest rollator chain in the world was formed, an event that was of great importance not only for the participants but also for society. An ambitious goal, which was primarily intended to draw attention to the concerns of people with disabilities, was achieved with a lot of commitment and support.
A total of 59 people with walkers and numerous accompanying persons came together on the Eberswalde market square. The mayor of Eberswalde, Götz Herrmann, ceremoniously opened the event. The goal was clear: to strengthen public awareness of people with limited mobility and seniors while at the same time highlighting the importance of health services for these target groups, reports Eberswalde.de.
Attention to mobility restrictions
The idea for this world record attempt came from Kathrin Görz, an employee of a vein studio in Eberswalde. “We want to draw attention to lonely people with limited mobility,” says Görz, who hopes to make a contribution to inclusion. This is not the first attempt of this kind: 47 people took part in a similar campaign last year. But the record, which was set in Ingolstadt in 2013 with around 400 participants, remains unchallenged as the new record has not received any official recognition rbb24 reported.
There were also additional offers throughout the event, such as driving safety training and the opportunity to test the technical safety of rollators. Professional cleaning of the walking aids was also offered to add a practical touch to all this.
Mobility as a basic need
Unhindered mobility is not only a personal need, but also crucial for social participation. Since 2009, the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN-BRK) has called for accessibility and personal mobility to be guaranteed. This is also a central point in Germany, because despite the barrier-free local transport required by the Passenger Transport Act, many regions are not yet optimally equipped bpb.de shows.
Mobility barriers can arise in a variety of ways, be it physical limitations or inadequate infrastructure. In Eberswalde, events such as the rollator world record attempt focus on these challenges and provide a platform for discussions and solutions. The organizers are counting on future record attempts to be made possible by increasing the number of participants in order to make an even stronger statement.
Such a commitment is fundamental to raise awareness of the needs of people with mobility limitations and thus contribute to inclusion. Eberswalde shows that with a good knack for organization and team spirit, you can create something great together and bring people together.
