Vandalism shock in Bernau: Nine cars attacked and damaged!
In Bernau, a recent incident is causing excitement and concern among residents. On November 17, 2025, unknown people were active on Mendelssohnstrasse and attacked a total of nine parked vehicles. Witnesses reported violent acts on the cars and then alerted the police. The perpetrators deliberately smashed the windows and searched the interior of the vehicles. The property damage amounts to several thousand euros, while the question of whether valuables were stolen remains unanswered for the time being. The criminal police have now started the investigation and are looking for further clues.
But this is not the only incident to be discussed in the region. On the same day there was a tragic traffic accident in Eberswalde. A 68-year-old cyclist died after a collision with a VW Beetle on Breite Straße. The accident is being investigated by the criminal police. The 61-year-old driver of the vehicle only suffered minor injuries in the collision and was taken to hospital for further treatment.
Road safety in focus
In order to increase traffic safety, especially during the dark season, the East Police Department carried out extensive traffic controls over the last seven days. Around every second road user checked had an infringement. A total of 354 infringements were registered, of which 158 were committed by cyclists and 178 by motor vehicle drivers. Inadequate or missing lighting was particularly frequently complained about. Prevention offers, such as more information about helmet use for minors cycling, were also provided.
Burglary protection in the spotlight
Given the increasing number of burglaries in the region, an information event will take place on November 19, 2025 at 6:00 p.m. in the cafeteria of the Zepernick primary and comprehensive school, Panketal. The topic is “burglary protection – what really helps!”. Jürgen Schirrmeister, the coordinator of police prevention in the Märkisch-Oderland district, will act as a guest speaker. The event aims to inform citizens about current protective measures for their homes. Mayor Maximilian Wonke and representatives of the district police will also be present.
A look at the overarching statistics shows that the police crime statistics for 2024 recorded a slight increase in residential burglaries. With 78,436 cases, including attempted break-ins, this is a worrying trend, although the numbers are still below levels compared to 2019. According to the experts at k-einbruch.de, however, the majority of these crimes can be prevented through correct behavior, security technology and the attentive actions of neighbors.
The risks are particularly higher in urban federal states, while in more rural areas such as Brandenburg the clearance rate for break-ins can stagnate. The police hope that events like those in Panketal will raise awareness of burglary protection. As recent figures show, insecurity about one's own home remains an important issue despite falling overall numbers.
