In Bad Freienwalde, visitors to the family festival “Bad Freienwalde is colorful” were confronted with a disturbing incident today. A group of twelve hooded men, armed with batons and quartz gloves, attacked the event around 12 p.m. The police then mobilized 20 emergency services to ensure the safety of the participants. Despite the attack, in which two people were injured, the musical program continued. The attackers disappeared towards the parking lot and Kanalstrasse while the police began investigations into grievous bodily harm and a violation of the assembly law. The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution is observing a frightening increase in anti-queer agitation on the Internet and is particularly disturbing the activities of right-wing extremist groups during Pride Month. These groups propagate a heteronormative view and argue that diversity in sexual orientation and family models must be combated. The incidents in Bad Freienwalde are part of a larger trend in which right-wing extremist forces are trying to participate in social debates about diversity and equality in order to put their ideologies in the spotlight.
