Police secure a hunter's weapons cache in Kremmen - what's behind it?

On July 17th there was a remarkable police operation in a quiet part of Kremmen. Between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m., police seized numerous weapons and a significant amount of ammunition from a 59-year-old hunter's house. During the inspection by the responsible weapons authority in Neuruppin, it was found that there were several violations of the weapons law. In total, the police confiscated nine weapons, corresponding weapon ownership cards, a hunting license and a large amount of ammunition. An explosive detail is that some of the ammunition was stored improperly. The reasons for the seizure have not yet been explained in more detail by the authorities, but the criminal police have taken over the investigation in order to clarify the situation in more detail.

The storage of weapons is subject to strict legal regulations, which are set out in [juraforum.de](https://www.juraforum.de/lexikon/ Waffenaufbewahrung). The Weapons Act and the General Weapons Act require that weapons be stored safely to prevent unauthorized access and theft. The regulations for gun storage were fundamentally revised in 2017, which brought with them specific requirements for safes and gun cabinets. According to Section 36 Paragraph 1 of the Weapons Act, weapons and ammunition must be stored in such a way that they cannot be lost.

Safe storage is mandatory

Hunters and gun owners are legally obliged to store their weapons in a safety container that complies with the DIN/EN 1143-1 standard. These security containers should be made of solid material and meet certain requirements to prevent unauthorized access. The type and weight of the gun safe determines how many guns can be safely stored in it. If the weight is less than 200 kg, up to five handguns are permitted, while if the weight is over 200 kg, up to ten handguns can be stored.

In addition, there are regulations for the shared storage of weapons, which is permitted under certain conditions if the weapons are stored in a security container. It is particularly important that weapons cannot be stored permanently in the car, but only during transport. Violations of these regulations can result in fines of up to 10,000 euros. In addition, weapons and ammunition that are no longer needed must be properly handed over to the responsible authority.

The incidents in Kremmen shed light on the responsibility of gun owners and the need to know and comply with legal requirements for safe storage. At a time when the issue of security is becoming increasingly important, such events must serve as a reminder that the responsible use of weapons is not only legally but also morally important.
