Graffiti wall in Kremmen city park destroyed shortly before inauguration!
In the Kremmen city park, the joy of an upcoming inauguration was suddenly dampened. The newly built graffiti wall for the young artists was supposed to be officially opened on October 28th. But two hours before the planned event, young people and carers found the wall destroyed. It lay on the ground, defaced and with wooden stakes torn from the ground. Mayor Sebastian Busse was angry about this act of vandalism and the disappointment was also noticeable among Simone Buttgereit, the head of the Kremmen youth club. She worked with the city park and the Scheunenviertel association to build the wall, which was made possible thanks to 1,000 euros in funding from the state of Brandenburg from the “Cultural Education in Brandenburg” program.
The idea of a graffiti wall came from the young people's desire to create a creative space. Thanks to the close cooperation between the youth club and the Scheunenviertel association, which has already implemented proven projects, the wall was securely anchored in the ground and should be weatherproof. However, these preparations were overshadowed by the vandalism. Despite the destruction, those responsible decided not to give up. They plan to rebuild the graffiti wall in cooperation with the farm and even enlarge it: from the original size of 3m x 2.5m, it will now grow to 6m, with pillars permanently embedded in the ground for more stability.
Foresight despite setbacks
Despite the setback, the positive voices of young people remain unbroken. Two hours after the wall was torn down, a workshop took place to experiment creatively with graffiti motifs. These activities show that the desire for artistic expression remains very popular in the Kremmen youth club. Buttgereit expressed her disappointment, but also the hope that the young people would continue to have a platform to develop their creativity.
The graffiti wall itself was positioned near a small cable car in the city park - a popular meeting point for children and young people. Although the vandalism in this form is inexcusable, everyone involved hopes that a new construction will not only realize the original vision, but also serve as a symbol against such acts.
It has already been shown in the past that the demand for creative offerings in Kremmen is growing. Projects like the graffiti wall are an expression of lively and committed youth work that doesn't give up even in difficult times. Ultimately, restoring the wall could also be seen as a way to strengthen cohesion in the Kremmen community.
At first glance, the incident and the destruction of the graffiti wall seem to have only negative consequences. But perhaps there is an opportunity for young people to stand up for their ideas and wishes together. A good example of the fighting spirit of Kremmen's youth!
