Belzig license plates are back: nostalgia for home!

There is reason to be happy in Bad Belzig: It has now been decided to reintroduce the BEL license plate! The Potsdam-Mittelmark district council decided this at a meeting in the spring. For many citizens, the BEL license plate will represent a symbol of home and belonging.

The first handover of the new signs took place when the district administrator ceremoniously handed over the combination “BEL BB 1” to a company car. Mayor Robert Pulz campaigned for the return of the nostalgic license plate and hit a real nerve. Ultimately, the BEL license plate was only valid in the old Belzig district from 1991 to 1993 and was replaced by a uniform abbreviation, the PM, after the districts merged.

A step into the past

The return of the BEL license plates is of course no coincidence. Since 2012, the Federal Council has been able to reintroduce previous license plates, which has sparked interest in the nostalgic license plates. The demand for BEL license plates has increased noticeably, especially since the MAZ report on the amendment. Only PM license plates have been issued in the region for years, while other districts, such as Havelland, have already introduced alternative abbreviations.

The administration has pushed hard for the change because the vehicle population in the district is growing by around 2,500 vehicles every year. Henry Wendt, a registration service provider, is offering an attractive 30% discount on conversions to the new BEL license plates until February. The application must be submitted in Werder (Havel) and of course approval from the Federal Ministry of Transport is required before the license plates can actually be issued.

Nostalgia and regional awareness

Everyone who lives between Werder (Havel), Wiesenburg/Mark and Wusterwitz now has the opportunity to apply for nostalgic license plates. This shows that citizens in the region care deeply about their roots and identity. The return to the BEL license plate is not only a step back in time, but at the same time an expression of a strong regional awareness.

For many people, the BEL license plate means more than just a combination of numbers and letters. It stands for a connection to home and is therefore a small piece of identity that is now celebrating a comeback.
