Petition for safe traffic: Citizens fight back in Miersdorf!
Things are simmering in Miersdorf: The current discussion about the construction of a new Edeka store at Dorfstrasse 8-11 is causing heated debates in the community. The citizens' initiative “We love Miersdorf” has launched a petition that is aimed directly at Mayor Philipp Martens and the Zeuthen municipal council. Your goal? An improvement in the quality of life and traffic safety in the area. The planned decision to build a new building is due to be made on December 16, 2025, and the residents are anything but enthusiastic.
The ambitious construction project envisages a sales area of 1,727 m², which is an increase of 627 m² compared to the current Edeka store. In addition to the market, an underground car park, several apartments and 130 parking spaces are also planned. But citizens' concerns are great: there are fears of significant traffic congestion and the associated threat to road safety, especially for children who travel nearby to schools and daycare centers. According to the petition, up to 5 large trucks per day and at least 70 cars per hour could flock to the new market - this could quickly lead to chaotic conditions.
Fears and concerns of residents
The residents have cited several points that speak against the new development plan. A dangerous traffic junction in front of the community library and the kindergartens must be secured by additional traffic light regulations in order to minimize possible dangers. According to critics, the design of the new building could affect the historical appearance of the town, especially the perception of the stone church from the 14th century.
Another serious concern is the loss of 5,648 m² of green space. These areas are not only important for the city's climate, but also for numerous environmental functions that Miersdorf has to offer. The petition also calls for the cancellation of development plan No. 142 in order to modernize the existing Edeka market instead of building a new, additional building.
Development plan and public participation
What is behind development plan No. 142? This is a binding land-use plan that is drawn up within the framework of the Building Code (BauGB) and determines how areas in the municipal area can be used. The draft plan has been available in the Zeuthen municipal building office from September 5, 2025 to September 22, 2025 and can be viewed on the municipal website. Citizens are invited to send their opinions to the land use planning department by email. The old Edeka location could definitely become crowded - the fear is that the new building will prevent the existing store from being renovated or continued to be used.
With an in-depth analysis of aspects such as traffic volume and the change in historical character, the development plan could also encounter resistance. Ultimately, land use planning has the task of taking sustainable development, social and economic requirements and environmental protection into account.
The decision on development plan No. 142 is to be made in a public meeting at 7 p.m. in the multi-purpose hall at Schulstrasse 1. Until then, citizens still have time to raise their voices and present their concerns. This is the only way to safeguard the common good in Miersdorf.
