BER Airport: Decline in passengers and more noise – a problem!
The developments at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) are quite moving at the moment. In June 2023, the airport experienced a decrease in passenger numbers of 50,000 compared to the previous month, marking the second consecutive month of such a decrease. This was reported by the Märkischen Allgemeine Zeitung.
A look at flight movements shows that despite the decline in passengers, the number of departures to the west of the airport increased. 4,672 aircraft took off from the southern runway, an increase of around 1,000 aircraft compared to June 2024. What is particularly noteworthy is that the number of flight movements at BER fell slightly to a total of 17,149, which is, however, 800 fewer than in June 2024.
Current challenges
One reason for the declining numbers could be the reduction by Ryanair, which wants to cut German air traffic by 20 percent due to high location costs. Airport boss Aletta von Massenbach has called on the federal government to reduce taxes on air traffic in order to remain competitive. “We have to have a good hand in order to increase the number of passengers again,” said von Massenbach.
In 2024, however, 25.5 million people traveled via BER, which corresponds to an increase of 10.4 percent and 2.4 million passengers compared to 2023. Demand was particularly high on December 29, 2024, when 76,444 passengers were counted. They gave these astonishing numbers Press release from Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH known.
Outlook on developments
The aviation industry is always changing, and passenger volumes at German airports reached 19.94 million in May 2025, a slight increase compared to April. However, the recovery rate in international comparison can still be classified as negative despite this upward movement. This information comes from a report by adv.aero.
It therefore remains to be seen how the situation around the airport will develop. The challenges are great, but there is still hope for a stable number of passengers and attractive flight connections.
