Fire brigade in constant operation: major fire near Jerischke under control!
In Brandenburg, the fire brigades are currently particularly challenged. On Wednesday there was a forest fire in an area of around 2,500 square meters near Jerischke, in the Spree-Neiße district. The fire site is in a difficult-to-access forest area, which made access and water supply significantly more difficult for the emergency services. The area, where young coniferous trees grow, flared up repeatedly, although the exact causes of the fire are still unclear. Around 50 emergency services from Brandenburg and Saxony were on site, supported by employees from a biomass farm and a glass factory. Although the situation is stable, targeted follow-up efforts are continuing to be carried out to prevent a recurrence. So reported Niederlausitz-aktuell.de.
But that's not all: over 200 forest fires have been reported in the region since the start of the forest fire season in March - a figure that is higher than in the entire previous year. The forest fire season in Brandenburg runs from March to the end of September. A field fire also broke out in Dissen-Striesow, also in the Spree-Neiße district, and ravaged around six hectares. When the emergency services arrived, a significant area was already in flames. Thanks to a coordinated approach by several fire departments, further spread was stopped. A tractor assisted by plowing a ten meter wide fire break. Here too, the flames are under control while the police have started investigating the cause of the fire Central German newspaper reported.
Serious danger situation in Brandenburg
The situation in Brandenburg remains tense. For example, a large-scale forest fire in Gohrischheide on the state border between Saxony and Brandenburg has caused concern since Tuesday afternoon. The fire started at a former military training area and spread south into Brandenburg. Two firefighters suffered serious burns while on duty. In Drebkau, a field caught fire during mowing work, which spread to an adjacent forest and affected an area of three hectares. 17 fire engines were in use here.
Around one hectare of forest is currently burning in Altdöbern and 15 fire engines are on site there too, while large-scale fires in Treuenbrietzen and Kleinbahren have been brought under control. Nevertheless, the follow-up work in Kleinbahren remains tense, where up to 150 emergency services are fighting the flames. The number of injured emergency services during this tense time is worrying: five firefighters were injured in the fires on Tuesday, including three in Kleinbahren and two in Treuenbrietzen. According to the State Forestry Office, Brandenburg has the highest risk of forest fires in all of Germany.
The nationwide statistics on forest fires show that important data has been collected since the 1970s in order to keep a better eye on the areas, causes and losses. The aim is to reduce the number and size of forest fires in the future in order to protect the valuable forest in Germany. The protection and preservation of forests in densely populated countries like Germany is playing an increasingly important role, especially at a time when extreme weather events are occurring more frequently. These forecasts and risk assessments are crucial for taking preventive measures to avoid forest fires, explains the Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food.
The coming weeks will show how the situation will develop and whether the dedicated emergency services can continue to successfully fight the flames.
