Rainy Sunday: Serious accident on the A13 near Calau!

On Sunday afternoon, July 15, 2025, a serious accident occurred on the A13 near Calau, which once again illustrates the dangers on the busy highway between Berlin and Dresden. A driver lost control of his VW on the rain-soaked road and crashed into the center guard rail and the right guard rail. The impact was so severe that the vehicle is no longer drivable and the total damage is estimated at around 20,000 euros. The driver had to be taken to hospital with injuries, as Niederlausitz Aktuell reports.

Unfortunately, this type of incident is not an isolated case on the A13, which is particularly frequently used by road users. Accidents occur again and again that are not only dangerous for those affected, but also cause traffic restrictions and traffic jams. According to Tag24, such accidents happen almost every day. The motorway attracts a high volume of traffic, particularly between the Dresden-Nord triangle and the Schönefelder Kreuz, which further exacerbates the situation.

But it wasn't just the accident near Calau that kept the emergency services busy this weekend. In Ruhland, smoke was reported from an unused factory building on Sunday evening at 9:30 p.m. The fire brigade was able to put out a fire, the cause of which is still unknown. Fortunately, there were no injuries and rail traffic remained unaffected while the police are now investigating the cause of the fire.

On Monday morning, July 16th, there was another traffic accident in the roundabout on Karl-Marx-Straße in Calau. Here an unknown black car braked for no reason, which resulted in a PEUGEOT rear-ending and a motorcyclist having to take evasive action and falling. Fortunately, the incident ended without anyone injured, but the black car was able to escape without permission. The property damage was in the four-digit range.

Statistics and safety on the roads

Such accidents contribute to the worrying statistics on German roads. In 2024, around 2.5 million traffic accidents were registered in Germany, a decrease compared to the previous year, while the number of accidents resulting in personal injuries remained at an alarming level. In the EU, our Vision Zero was launched to aim for zero road deaths by 2050, but human errors such as inattention and inappropriate speed remain common causes of such accidents. In 2024, 198 people died in alcohol-related accidents in Germany alone, which shows that there is still an urgent need for action, as the data from Statista makes clear.

Given these incidents in the region and the overall security situation, every driver should always have a good hand and drive responsibly on the roads. The current situation requires increased awareness of the dangers and careful driving, especially in difficult weather conditions.
