Electricity network in Finsterwalde: Important change by September 2025

Something is happening in the power grid in Finsterwalde! The Finsterwalde public utility company has decided to comprehensively modernize its network by September 1, 2025. A central element of this measure is increasing the medium voltage from 15 to 20 kilovolts (kV). The aim is to increase the quality and security of the power supply and improve transmission capability, as LR-Online reports.

However, the changeover will not take place without interruptions: from Monday to Thursday, citizens can expect power cuts of up to seven hours, between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. This affects all districts and households in Finsterwalde that have already been informed in writing about the planned shutdown times. Sensitive devices such as IT systems, heating controls and alarm systems should be disconnected from the power supply during these times to avoid damage.

Details about the change

This measure is part of a large-scale voltage changeover that will be carried out by MITNETZ STROM from May 5th to September 5th, 2025. The Finsterwalde municipal utilities are also affected by this adjustment. The communities in the catchment area of the Finsterwalde substation have been supplied with 15 kV for decades, and now the standardization to 20 kV is to take place. This not only simplifies network operations, but also reduces network losses. According to Amt Kleine Elster, customers should be informed about 10 days before a planned power interruption.

Another important point: In addition to the regular power cuts, there will be one-off interruptions of up to six hours. Customers are asked to switch off or disconnect their sensitive devices here too. The systems must be considered live during the interruption, which requires increased caution. After all, who wants to rely on a device that no longer works in the middle of the changeover?

Security of supply in view

In times of energy transition and growing energy trade in Europe, electricity and gas networks are facing new challenges. The Bundesnetzagentur emphasizes that security of supply depends on several factors. This includes sufficiently high generation capacities and resilient control mechanisms to ensure grid stability.

It remains important for the population in Finsterwalde to be well informed about the exact switch-off times and to plan necessary work with high electricity consumption outside of these times. Further information and regular updates on the modernization of the power grid can be found on the Stadtwerke website at www.swfi.de.

It remains to be hoped that the measures will go smoothly and that citizens can benefit from improved electricity supply. Because one thing is certain: a good network makes everyday life a lot easier!
