Today at 5:15 p.m.: DFB Cup draw with third division teams expected!

Today, June 15, 2025, things will be exciting in German football! The draw for the first DFB Cup round will take place at 5:15 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ZDF and via the Liga3-Online ticker. This year, nine third division teams can look forward to exciting duels against first division teams or the best 14 second division teams from last season. One potential surprise factor: That number is three teams lower this season than last year. The participating third division teams are:

  • SSV Ulm 1846
  • Jahn Regensburg
  • 1. FC Saarbrücken
  • Energie Cottbus
  • Hansa Rostock
  • Rot-Weiss Essen
  • Viktoria Köln
  • Wehen Wiesbaden
  • 1. FC Schweinfurt

The draw will be carried out by athlete Owen Ansah as a “raffle ticket”, while DFB Vice President Peter Frymuth will be in charge of the draws. The first round of the DFB Cup will take place between August 15th and 18th and August 26th and 27th. It will also be exciting throughout the rest of the course, because round two is on October 28th and 29th, the round of 16 on December 2nd and 3rd, the quarter-finals on December 3rd and 4th. and 10/11. February and the semi-finals on 21/22. April scheduled. The grand final will then take place on May 23rd. The bonus distribution for the coming season is not yet known, but last season each club received an impressive 209,500 euros for reaching the first round of the cup.

The third division teams on the way to success

A look at the recent achievements of third division teams shows that they often cause surprises. Arminia Bielefeld recently made it to the semi-finals after sensationally eliminating several Bundesliga teams in the preliminary round. Tonight the decisive semi-final game against Bayer Leverkusen is on the program, where Bielefeld has the chance to become the fourth third division team to reach the final. It would be another milestone for the club, who have defeated some formidable opponents in the past. With last year's semi-finalists 1. FC Saarbrücken, who were the only fourth division team to reach the semi-finals the previous season, this year we also have a good example of how far third division teams can go.

In the history of the DFB Cup, several third division teams have already reached the final. Would you like an example? Hertha BSC II lost to Bayer Leverkusen in 1993, Energie Cottbus lost to VfB Stuttgart in 1997, and Union Berlin lost to Schalke 04 in 2001. FC St. Pauli, who lost to Bayern Munich in 2006, completed the three-pack of third division teams in the final.

Overall, it shows that the DFB Cup is not only a desirable goal for first and second division teams. Even in the third division, the chance to shine in national competition is highly valued. So until the draw and beyond, the question remains whether a third division team can pull off a big surprise this season. We are excited!
