Journalist Prize 2025: Mellen honored with strong stories!

Great joy in Mellen: This year, the “Other Times” journalists’ prize will be awarded to three outstanding contributions that convey courage and hope. The prize, which is awarded in the category “Easter – Stories of Getting Up”, will be presented on June 19th in Hamburg. It is particularly worth mentioning that Mellen is one of the awarded cities - expectations are high here in the race for third place.

David Krenz secured first prize with his impressive report “The Lord of the Rings”, which was published in the respected magazine STERN. Krenz sheds light on how locals and refugees from Afghanistan, Chechnya and Ukraine are working together to revitalize a boxing club in Eisenhüttenstadt. A moving example of cohesion and new beginnings that shows how crises can create new partnerships.

Diversity of stories

The second prize deservedly went to Solveig Flörke and Marko Rösseler for their moving WDR documentary “Death in the Clubhouse – How Clubs Fight for Survival”. This is an in-depth analysis of the gradual decay of club life in Germany, a topic that directly affects many of our readers in Balve. Numerous local personalities were interviewed here, making the documentary particularly approachable and relevant for viewers. If you feel like you've missed something, you can watch the documentary at any time in the WDR media library.

Diana Laarz received the third award for her moving report “What does 'normal' mean?”, which appeared in GEO magazine. In this personal story, Laarz tells of her son David and his rare diagnosis, a story that awakens empathy and understanding and points to the challenges of dealing with difference.

A prize with tradition

A total of 78 contributions were received from various media, which underlines the attractiveness and high quality of this prize. The Journalist Prize is endowed with 6,000 euros and has been awarded for over 20 years. The non-profit association “Other Times” not only focuses on journalistic excellence, but also deals with important life issues and the annual rhythms that shape our society.

The anticipation for the awards ceremony is already great, and everyone involved is hoping for an event that will be remembered for a long time. Special recognition goes to the three award winners, whose stories not only inform but also inspire. The event is sure to be a highlight of the year for all media enthusiasts and storytellers.
