Fast Internet for Plattenburg: Groundbreaking ceremony for fiber optic network!
Something is happening in Prignitz! The starting signal for the expansion of the fiber optic network was given in the community of Plattenburg on Monday. Around 503 households in the towns of Glöwen and Plattenburg will benefit from this measure, which is being implemented by GlasfaserPlus, a joint venture between Deutsche Telekom and IFM Investors. In her speech, the mayor of the municipality, Anja Kramer, emphasized the immense importance of a fast and stable internet, which increases both the quality of life and the values of real estate in the region.
The new network will enable an impressive data transfer rate of up to 1 Gbit/s - which means lightning-fast surfing for the affected households. According to [Nordkurier](https://www.nordkurier.de/regional/prignitz/schnelles-internet-spatenstich-fuer-den-glasfarben-ausbau-in- Plattenburg-3679360), the expansion is available to all telecommunications providers, although customers are required to book a connection. During the expansion phase, those interested can book a connection free of charge - an opportunity that shouldn't be missed! After the phase, fees can be expected which, for example at Telekom, can amount to up to 799.95 euros.
Fiber optic expansion in the region
The fiber optic expansion is taking place in three large lots, which have been implemented in the Prignitz district since 2019. In the first phase, which began in 2020, the city of Pritzwalk and the Meyenburg and Putlitz-Berge offices were developed. The second lot, which includes regions such as Lenzen and Karstädt, started on July 22, 2021 and will install 224 kilometers of route network with up to 1,100 connections. A third lot is currently supplying the city of Wittenberge and the Bad Wilsnack/Weisen office, which began construction in 2022. All work is expected to be completed by the middle of this year, significantly improving the region's digital landscape.
The broadband expansion is not just a Telekom project. e.discom is also heavily committed to advancing Prignitz's digital infrastructure. Around 3,500 residential units will benefit from new fiber optic connections, and in 25 towns, including Meyenburg and Pritzwalk, existing internet access will be converted to high-speed. This project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure as well as by the state and district. One goal is to close all “white spots” in the region within three years and provide comprehensive access to high-speed Internet.
The time is ripe for digital changes
The federal government has recognized the establishment of a high-performance digital infrastructure as an overriding public interest. In view of the challenges brought about by the corona pandemic and other crises, network expansion is essential. Currently, around 74% of households in Germany are supplied with gigabit connections. Fiber optic connections are available for almost one in three households - a number that should continue to rise as the federal government wants to accelerate the expansion in order to also open up untouched areas. More information about the nationwide expansion plans can be found here.
Another important point is the upcoming citizen information events. One such event will take place on July 9th in the auditorium of the high school in Glöwen, where residents can clarify all their questions about fiber optic connections. Regular consultation hours are also planned to inform citizens about the progress of the expansion and to answer technical and contractual questions.
Overall, it can be seen that Prignitz is on the way to significantly improving the digital infrastructure. A fast internet connection is not only important for citizens' quality of life, but also crucial for future-oriented economic prospects. The time for digital change has come!
