New director for Tucholsky Museum: Peter Graf takes off!
On Tuesday, July 15, 2025, Peter Graf will take up the position of literary and artistic director at the Kurt Tucholsky Literature Museum in Rheinsberg. The city of Rheinsberg proudly announced this in a press release. Graf has many years of experience in the publishing industry, having worked as an independent publisher since 2010. His commitment will particularly include the republication of novels, diaries and non-fiction books from the Weimar Republic and exile literature.
What can we expect from Peter Graf in this role? His tasks include not only the efficient management of ongoing museum operations, but also the acquisition of funding for staff and the development of a contemporary museum and exhibition concept. Graf has a close connection to Kurt Tucholsky and his work, which makes him ideal for this position.
Important restructuring and challenges
A significant change is coming to the Tucholsky Museum as Peter Böthig, its long-time scientific director, is retiring in 2024. In addition, it was decided in 2023 that the Tucholsky Museum and the tourist information in Rheinsberg should be merged. Ellen Krukenberg has been the new head of the Office for Culture, Tourism and Economic Development since 2025, which could bring a breath of fresh air into the institutional work.
However, the museum's situation is also tense. The Rheinsberg local branch of the Alliance Greens has called for Mayor Frank-Rudi Schwochow to sign the contract quickly in a petition. On July 10, Brandenburg's state parliament president Ulrike Liedtke and Peter Böthig signed an online petition to save the Tucholsky Museum. These measures are necessary in view of the fact that the Academy of Arts in Berlin has suspended cooperation with the museum until further notice.
A place of remembrance and debate
The Tucholsky Museum is not only a place for collecting and preserving materials about the life and work of Kurt Tucholsky, but also sets standards in the examination of literary publications from the Weimar Republic. It follows the Enlightenment and democratic tradition and promotes cultural exchange through readings and writing workshops. Visitors can immerse themselves in the world of Kurts Tucholsky's literature and actively engage with the intellectual standards and everyday problems of modern humanity.
The museum presents an impressive 11,000 exhibits, including autographs, photographs and documents from Tucholsky and other important figures of his time. The entry prices are also very moderate: adults pay 5 euros, reduced prices 4 euros, and there is a ticket for families for 10 euros. School classes can take part for 1 euro per student, which makes the museum particularly attractive for young people.
As the museum's official website tucholsky-museum.de announces, the possibility of booking tours online is also offered, which is convenient for art lovers and literature enthusiasts. At a time when cultural values and the communication of history are crucial, the Tucholsky Museum remains an indispensable place of remembering and learning.
