The Broken Jar: Judgment Day with Surprising Revelations!

Things will soon get exciting again in a small, tranquil village near Utrecht, as the classic “The Broken Jug” turns the court day into a turbulent theater performance. On November 13, 2025, this piece will be performed in the Harz Theater, which will shine in new splendor by director R. Vogtenhuber-Freitag. The centerpiece of the performance is the village judge Adam, who lies in a deep sleep, completely wrapped in a white shirt, very damaged. Strange circumstances surround this judge, who finds himself in a few difficult situations due to a fall that he explains as "tripping over himself." Adam's main problem may be his loss of the official wig, whose fate seems more than questionable - perhaps it was used as a nest by a cat or, as Adam claims, damaged by a candle. His attempts to explain his questionable circumstances reveal a mixture of truth and lies.

The dispute that shakes up the village community relates to a broken jug, whose widow, Marthe Rull, and her daughter Eve's fiancé clash in the process. A judge named Walter insists on a proper trial, which makes the opponents all the more stubborn, while Eve, who was present at the incident, remains silent. It looks like Judge Adam knows more than he's letting on. Are the waves of dispute really so easy to smooth over?

Relevance and social context

The premiere in Huisum becomes even more explosive due to the debate surrounding the #MeToo movement. This movement created public pressure that pushed forward the reform of sexual criminal law. The demand for more justice for victims of sexual violence is also reflected in the theater performance, as it thematically points to hidden conflicts between power and abuse. Legal solutions such as “No means no” and the extension of the statute of limitations are intended to give victims the opportunity to make their voices heard and to hold perpetrators accountable - an advance that was significantly implemented in 2016 and also focuses, among other things, on tightening penalties for serious assaults.

The combination of theater and current social issues ensures that viewers are not only entertained, but also stimulated to think. “The Broken Jug” is more than just a play; it is a reflection of our times and the challenges we face as a society. However, it should be noted that despite advances in the legal system and increased awareness of sexual assault, there is still a need for clarification, especially when it comes to the provability of crimes.

Ticket information and advance booking

The enthusiasm for this production is also reflected in the ticket prices. Admission costs 25 euros, reduced 12 euros for schoolchildren, trainees, students and federal volunteers, provided proof is provided. Tickets are available at the tourist information centers in Güstrow, Bützow, Teterow and Schwaan, although an advance booking fee may apply. Don't want to miss this cultural highlight? Grab it quickly, because the places are likely to go quickly!

Whether in the small community in the Netherlands or here in Brandenburg, the themes of power, justice and humanity are universal and important. “The Broken Jug” manages to combine these impressions in an entertaining way and at the same time shed light on the challenges of today. Be there when theater questions the everyday and initiates discourse.
