Bicycle Pride in Potsdam: Celebrate tolerance on two wheels!

On June 21, 2025, the motto in Potsdam will be “On your wheels – for tolerance and visibility!” The now sixth bicycle pride demo is initiated by the Rainbow Potsdam association and promises to be a colorful highlight for the city's queer community. The demo starts at 2 p.m. on the Old Market in the city center and offers not only a cycling route, but also a running route for pedestrians. The aim is to create a broad space for everyone who advocates tolerant coexistence. Potsdam's equal opportunities officer, Claudia Sprengel, will open the event with a welcoming speech. The Bicycle Pride was originally launched as a pandemic-friendly variant of Christopher Street Day (CSD), and has now established itself as an annual highlight that is making big waves. Last year around 750 people took part and the event is constantly growing.

Growth in participant numbers

The first rainbow bicycle demo took place on July 30, 2020 with around 250 participants. Since then, the numbers have increased continuously: there were 430 participants in 2021, around 500 in 2022 and around 650 participants in 2023. In 2024 the name was officially changed to “Bicycle Pride” and a record 750 participants were reported. This clearly shows how important visibility, acceptance and diversity are within urban society QueerLive confirmed.

From 4 p.m. there will be a Pride festival in the data center on Breite Straße, which will provide entertainment with queer artists. The official “After Pride Party” starts at 7 p.m. and ends the day in a convivial atmosphere.

An important part of LGBTQ+ culture

Germany is considered one of the ten most LGBTQ+ friendly countries in Europe, according to Ilga-Europe's “Rainbow Map”. Large cities like Cologne and Berlin have lively queer communities, in Cologne for example with over 950,000 participants in the annual CSD. In Potsdam, events like Bicycle Pride send clear signals of acceptance and diversity and thus play an important role in the regional queer movement. The next CSD demo in Potsdam took place in May, and anticipation is growing for upcoming events, such as those in Wittenberg on July 5th and in Frankfurt/Oder on September 13th.

The bicycle pride demo in Potsdam shows how a region is committed to respectful and diverse coexistence. By taking part in such events, all supporters of tolerance and equality can actively support their point of view and send an important signal for acceptance in society.
