Dramatic crash: Teltow-Fläming falls 276 in the future atlas!
In today's future atlas from Prognos, which evaluates the development of 400 counties and independent cities in Germany every three years, the district of Teltow-Fläming (TF) has fallen dramatically. From 174th place in 2022 the region crashes to 276th place, like maz reported. The district, which was still in 170th place in 2019, has lost its former top position in the new federal states.
The evaluation in the future atlas takes place based on various criteria such as demography, labor market, competition, innovation, prosperity and social situation. But the past few years have been turbulent for TF. Despite the decline, District Administrator Kornelia Wehlan is optimistic. It emphasizes that the number of employees rose from 57,425 in 2015 to 68,899 at the end of 2024 and the unemployment rate dropped.
looking for solutions
The negative performance arouses mixed reactions in the political landscape. SPD head of the SPD, Erik Stohn, sees unused opportunities and demands faster decisions to promote the district's economy. Birgit Bessin, the AfD district parliamentary group leader, also requires a "political turnaround" to remedy the infrastructural defects. The CDU, on the other hand, names challenges such as demography, shortage of skilled workers and structural inequalities that explain the poor performance.
Nevertheless, Wehlan addresses the settlement and expansion of various companies, including chiefs Culinar, DHL and Rolls-Royce, who have invested in Teltow-Fläming in recent years. From 2019 to 2025, over 573 million euros flowed into the local economy. In addition, the district has even improved to the 154th place in the area of "prosperity and social situation", which indicates positive developments in this sector.
A look into the future
The future atlas creates a new overview every three years and is based on the latest data. As a challenge for the region, the structural change, digitization and demographic changes are pointed out. At a time when many counties in the ranking deteriorate, the region's resilience is particularly important. In Brandenburg, for example, other counties benefit from investments, such as Tesla and other funding.
The responsible persons look at a critical eye for the coming years. The progress in innovation and the need to minimize the effects of crises such as the energy crisis are central topics that urgently need to be taken into account in future decisions. While some rural circles catch up in the future viability, Teltow-Fläming belongs to the group that could have difficulty if no timely and effective measures are taken.
