Big cat causes excitement at Geiseltalsee: Police on duty!
A sighting of a big cat is causing a stir in the south of Saxony-Anhalt. On Friday evening, residents observed a suspected predator in the area of the harbor at Geiseltalsee in Braunsbedra, which immediately mobilized the authorities. As RadiorST reports, the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Control has already issued a warning.
The police are increasingly deployed in the area and are monitoring the area extensively. A helicopter was even used to protect the population. The population is constantly informed via the Nina warning app. It is strongly advised to stay away from the animal and avoid meadows and forests. Sightings should be reported immediately to the fire and rescue service control center on 112.
Looking for clues in the Geiseltalsee
A caller alerted authorities to a video showing the suspected predator on social media. The head of the public order department, Sabine Faulstich, confirmed the sighting and emphasized: “It is not a fake.” Experts found the footage to be credible and it is suspected that the animal could be a cougar. However, compared to a similar incident in Kleinmachnow, in which a supposed lion was ultimately identified as a wild boar, it remains unclear exactly what species it was.
What is particularly explosive is the fact that the Geiseltalsee, which is the remains of an open-cast brown coal mine, is considered one of the largest artificial lakes in Germany and is therefore a large local recreation area. Despite this natural beauty, there is no zoo in the area, which raises the question of how a big cat ended up here.
Big Cat Science and Urban Legends
The term “big cat” arouses enthusiasm and fascination for many people. When looking for information about these animals, not only cat lovers will get their money's worth, but also those interested in finding out about a new and sudden beginning. There are also interesting tests, such as the quiz from tierfreunde.com, with which users can find out which cat breed suits their lifestyle. What is described as a quiet couch cat or an adventurous hunter has little in common with predators that may have entered the region, as in the case of Geiseltalsee.

Whether this is just an urban rumor or whether there is actually a big cat roaming nearby remains to be seen. What is certain, however, is that the authorities are doing everything they can to locate the animal and ensure the safety of the public. An adventure that certainly doesn't correspond to everyone's everyday life - but as we all know, you never know what you'll encounter in Brandenburg!
