Avian influenza: monitoring zone established in the Potsdam-Mittelmark district

A worrying outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza in Saxony-Anhalt is forcing the authorities to take comprehensive measures. This development was confirmed on November 27, 2025, and a general animal disease decree immediately came into force. The situation is critical because avian influenza, also known as bird flu with the H5N1 subtype, is spreading rapidly and endangering both domestic and wild birds. Therefore, a surveillance zone was set up that extends into the Potsdam-Mittelmark district and covers a radius of at least ten kilometers around the outbreak, as Potsdam-Mittelmark reports.

The responsible authorities have already initiated measures to combat the disease. Poultry keepers in the affected zones are asked to take precautions to avoid contact between their animals and wild birds. This includes, among other things, stable keeping and the roofing of aviaries. Events such as poultry exhibitions and markets are temporarily prohibited to prevent the virus from spreading further. Suspected cases of avian influenza must be reported to the veterinary office immediately to enable rapid reactions.

Monitoring measures and safeguards

The general animal health order, which was published on November 28, 2025, also sets out detailed requirements for poultry farmers. They not only have to monitor their stocks, but also strictly adhere to hygiene regulations. Daily self-monitoring is mandatory, and any changes in the health status of the birds must be reported immediately to the veterinary office, according to the guidelines, which were supplemented in further information from Mittelsachsen.

The current situation is particularly challenging for many poultry farmers. The ban on moving birds and their products out of the surveillance zone represents a significant economic hurdle for many companies. In order to avoid further infections, measures to combat rodents and insects are also necessary.

Epidemiological investigations and development

The spread of avian influenza has led to several outbreaks in different regions this fall. Infections have also been detected in wild birds. The Potsdam-Mittelmark district is therefore working closely with the animal disease control service to closely monitor the situation and take timely measures. The aim is to prevent the spread of the virus and protect healthy stocks, as the district emphasizes in its press release.

Current developments are being closely monitored by those responsible and the surveillance zone will remain in force for at least 30 days until it is officially lifted. It is expected that further precautionary measures may be necessary in the coming weeks and months to protect poultry populations in the region.
