Fire brigade saves Biotop Kienpfuhl - Mayor announces measures!

Zeuthen, Deutschland - In Zeuthen, the persistent heat period currently ensures worrying water levels in the Kienpfuhl biotope, a valuable habitat for many endangered animal species. Mayor Philipp Martens (Die Linke) promptly announced a rescue operation to preserve the wildlife. He received support from the fire brigade Zeuthen/Miersdorf, who willingly offered their help. At first the MAWV had rejected the pumping of drinking water into the biotope, but the fire brigade acted and finally pumped 200 cubic meters of water from a fire fountain to temporarily save the biotope. The NABU Dahmeland e.V. under the direction of Matthias Rackwitz praised the successful cooperation between the community and fire brigade, which immediately appealed in this critical situation. Resident Anke Vogt expressed her gratitude for the campaign.

important habitats in the Kienpfuhl

The Kienpfuhl, which was once more extensive and used to take an area of 20 hectares, plays an important role as a habitat for newts and water frogs and serves as a rest area for many species of birds, such as cranes and geese. The drying of this flat bog not only affects flora and fauna, but also leads to a dangerous mineralization of the bog body. In particular, the ridge newt, which has the last occurrence in Zeuthen, is under strict protection in accordance with the FFH directive and the Federal Nature Conservation Act. The lack of sufficient water over several years could result in extinction of this sensitive nature.

In order to improve the situation sustainably, numerous measures are planned. This includes the repair of the inflow from Parkstraße/Birkenallee, the re filling of the residual water and the revision of the 2002/2012 care concept. A solar pump will also be considered to ensure regular water supply in the future. In the long term, forest conversion should not only promote basic water, but also improve the ecological state of the area. The municipality's budget for 2022 already provides for examinations for these measures.

collaboration for nature conservation

A look at the importance of nature conservation and water management shows that both areas are inextricably linked and fulfill essential social tasks. Effective renaturation measures, as they are also necessary in the Kienpfuhl, can not only contribute to improving water posture, but can also promote habitats for endangered species. The Federal Environment Agency emphasizes that close cooperation between nature conservation and water management leads to positive effects that benefit not only nature but also to the population.

The rescue operation on the Kienpfuhl is not only a short -term intervention, but also part of a more comprehensive plan to maintain and restore ecological balance in the region. The continuous support of associations such as NABU and the active participation of the municipality are crucial to ensure permanent protection of this unique landscape.
