Hidden object book The Schnipseljet: Discover Schönefeld with Piepsi!
A happy day for the little ones in Schönefeld: On November 24, 2025, the new children's book “The Schnipseljet - A teeming adventure over Schönefeld” was presented. The loving protagonist, the Schönefeld mouse Piepsi, invites all little readers to build a paper airplane with her and explore the community's hidden object pictures. The book has a generous format of 22 × 30 cm and comes with 30 pages full of exciting discoveries.
The idea behind this colorful work is not only to give the children fun, but also to give them knowledge about the area where they live. Where are the important squares, streets and characteristic places of Schönefeld? The book is a wonderful way to strengthen the feeling of community between the districts - especially those that are separated by the nearby BER airport. Mayor Christian Hentschel initiated the project because promoting cohesion and a sense of community is very important to him.
A gift for the little ones
The publication is a gift for all Schönefeld children of daycare age and first graders. The book is now available for purchase in bookstores and online at piepsi.online, priced at €9.90. The materials for the hidden object pictures hidden in the pages were designed by the talented author and illustrator Verena Dragendorf and the editor Elisabeth Trübenbach. The work is printed by Grafische Centrum Cuno GmbH & Co. KG.
“The Schnipseljet” is not just a book for children, but also an experience for the whole family, as it offers many opportunities to search and discover. Adults who know the area can also learn new things about their hometown while browsing, which has particular value in times of alienation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Diversity and representation in children's literature
Another idea that is becoming increasingly present in the background of such projects is the importance of diversity in children's literature. Current studies show that 40% of children enrolled in school in Germany have a migration background. The “DRIN – Visions for Children’s Books” project aims to bring international actors together to establish new standards for more diverse children’s literature in Europe. It's about telling stories and including perspectives that do justice to a pluralistic society.
The relevance of this development is undisputed: children's books have a long-term impact on children's self-image and worldview. It is crucial that stories reflect the most diverse realities of life. The project not only promotes participation in shaping the book market, but also sensitizes publishers, libraries and educational institutions to address discrimination-critically.
In order to promote diversity in children's literature, it is necessary to also focus on the perspectives of children of color and their intersectional realities of life. Meaningful actions and initiatives are essential as part of this mission.
Overall, the presentation of the “Schnipseljet” is another step in the right direction to promote a sense of community in Schönefeld and at the same time create awareness of the diversity in stories. The hidden object pictures not only stimulate the imagination, but also convey a feeling for one's own home - something that is particularly important in these times. This makes reading a big experience, even on a small scale!
