Bicycle demo in Werneuchen: Safe cycle path for children required!

Resistance to better cycling infrastructure is forming in the Barnim region. On September 14, 2025, Tom Rochau's initiative will organize a bicycle demo that will draw attention to the grievances along the B158 between Werneuchen and Tiefensee. Above all, safe cycle paths for children and young people should be required, because currently cyclists on the main road are in direct competition with fast-moving cars and trucks.

The demand for a cycle path alongside the road, which has existed for years, is strongly supported by Rochau and many supporters. A recent accident on August 29, 2025, which resulted from risky overtaking maneuvers, highlights the urgency of this concern. The demo starts at 10 a.m. at the parking lot behind the Aral gas station in Werneuchen and leads over critical points in Werneuchen-Ost and Werftpfuhl to Tiefensee. The aim is to put pressure on municipalities, the district and the state to promote the construction of a safe cycle path. The event is supported by clubs such as the Barnimer Feldmark and the ADFC, all of which are behind the initiative.

Challenges & solutions

The planning and implementation of cycling projects is often lengthy and complicated. As Difu reports, barriers and good practices were analyzed in several German cities in order to develop optimized recommendations for action. Among other things, a quick check for municipal cycling planning was developed, which supports cities in assessing the current status of their cycling infrastructure and developing concrete suggestions for improvement.

Successful examples from other cities show that rapid implementation of cycling measures is possible if suitable framework conditions are created. Frankfurt am Main, for example, has achieved effective implementation of its cycling projects through a special administrative structure. And Hamburg also relies on professional project management in order to better resolve existing conflicts and thus advance cycling projects more quickly.

Financial support for cycling projects

A significant factor in promoting cycling infrastructure is the financial resources available to the area. According to the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport, the framework conditions for financing cycling have been improved. Programs such as the “Cycling Model Projects” by 2029 and the “Cycle Network Germany” by 2029 should contribute to the implementation of meaningful projects.

It is important to know that the construction and maintenance of cycle paths on federal highways are 100% financed by the federal government, but not subsidized. This means that clearer financial perspectives should be created for municipalities that have an interest in improving cycling infrastructure.

Tom Rochau emphasizes the personal motivation behind this initiative: children and young people should be able to ride their bikes safely. The upcoming demonstration not only provides a platform for cyclists, but also aims to be a voice for all citizens who advocate for safe cycling infrastructure. Everyone can support the cause - even without actively taking part in the demo. Statements and sharing of information are ways in which non-participants can make their views clear.

The opportunity for change is just around the corner. By joining forces, we want to pave the way for a safe transport infrastructure - for all cyclists in Barnim.
