Art shapes spaces: Participation in the Biennale in Lausitz!
The anticipation of the first openart Lausitz Biennale 2026 grows! From July 31 to September 20, 2026, Lausitz will become a stage for contemporary art, under the motto “Art shapes spaces”. The aim of the biennale is to make the cultural diversity of the region visible and to strengthen the art and cultural spaces in Lusatia.
The Biennale not only brings together established artists, but also invites numerous local actors to take part. In particular, artists and cultural workers, associations and non-profit organizations are invited to present their creative ideas in the form of open spaces. There are different participation formats: In category 1, studios can present their own work without financial support, while in category 2, live actions, workshops and events are supported. The projects are selected by a jury made up of citizens and cultural workers.
Invitation to participate
The call for applications has been running since November 21, 2025, and the application form has been available online since November 17, 2025. Interested parties have until January 12, 2026 to submit their ideas. What is particularly exciting is that projects from category 2 can be supported with a grant of up to 1,200 euros. This funding is intended to create creative and high-quality projects that reflect the diversity of Lusatia.
The Biennale itself also reflects the balance of structural change in Brandenburg's Lusatia, which is facing challenges, particularly 35 years after the fall of the Wall. Factories and production facilities are closing, the landscape is changing, and vacancies are the order of the day. Young artists in particular are taking the opportunity to work and be creative in these empty spaces, which can create a “technology of improvisation” as a new artistic practice for the 21st century.
Art camp for young talents
A special highlight in preparation for the Biennale is the art camp, which will take place at the Atelierhof Werenzhain during the autumn holidays of 2025. Here, young people between the ages of 12 and 21 can not only try out their creativity, but also develop their skills Biennale format participate. The event offers workshops, excursions to museums and the opportunity to select your own artistic contributions and present them at the biennale. Registration for the art camp is still possible!
The Biennale will take place at various locations in Lusatia, including the Atelierhof Werenzhain in Doberlug-Kirchhain, the Kunstgussmuseum in Lauchhammer and the Kunsthalle in Cottbus. The venues enable a lively discussion of art and contribute to the networking of regional cultural workers.
One goal of this biennale is to bring together local perspectives with international positions, which not only contributes to enriching the cultural scene but also strengthens coexistence in Lusatia. Participants have the opportunity to help shape the rich and diverse culture of rural areas and bring a breath of fresh air to community art initiatives. Anyone who is interested should find out more now and take the opportunity to become part of this exciting artistic journey.
