The spectacle observed in Senftenberg, a town in the Oberspreewald-Lausitz region, probably captivated many an onlooker. While the bridge survived the test, demolition work still lies ahead. These are scheduled to begin next Monday. As part of the test, a section of the bridge was loaded with an impressive 70 tons by using numerous 1.5-ton concrete slabs. This approach corresponded to the plan of the nationwide project Aistec Pro, which is supported by the Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space. With this project, those responsible want to ensure that traffic structures that are exposed to high loads and climatic influences can be better monitored and maintained in the future.

The challenges of stability

What is important is the realization that many bridges in Brandenburg are in a similar condition to those in Senftenberg. According to estimates, around 70 bridges in the region are in a critical situation, which shows an urgent need for action. The Federal Agency for Technical Relief was also involved in the stress test in order to optimize its own processes in dangerous situations and to gain new insights.

The overall goal of Aistec Pro is the practical introduction of digital procedures for assessing the condition of infrastructure. Image and sensor-based monitoring technologies are used here, which enable precise status data collection. A dedicated cloud platform is also being developed to provide automated data analysis and condition assessments.

The look into the future

The extensive tests on various buildings are intended to demonstrate the effectiveness of these digital processes and their practical added value. Adjustments for optimized implementation are identified to increase the safety and longevity of traffic structures.

A ray of hope for the future: The construction of a new bridge is already planned for October 2026. The promise of an improved infrastructure maintenance system can help ensure the long-term safety of road users in the region and extend the life of future structures. A good knack for dealing with such projects is essential so that the infrastructure remains reliable in the years to come.
