Serious bicycle accident near Doberlug-Kirchhain: rescue helicopter in action!

On Wednesday evening there was a serious accident between Hennersdorf (Doberlug-Kirchhain) and Finsterwalde. At around 6:50 p.m., two teenagers, 13 and 15 years old, collided while cycling, resulting in a dramatic fall. Police officers and the rescue team had to be alerted, and a rescue helicopter was used to take the injured to a hospital. Fortunately, the bikes remained largely roadworthy, which limited the damage to around 100 euros. The circumstances of the accident are still unclear and are being investigated by the police, as Niederlausitz-aktuell.de/niederlausitz-aktuell/orte/elbe-elster/doberlug-kirchhain/hennersdorf/299147/rettungshubschrauber-zu-fahrradunfall-bei-doberlug-kirchhain-alarmiert.html) reported.

Cycling accidents are a recurring topic that is worrying not only in Brandenburg but nationwide. In a similar incident in the Rastatt area, a 41-year-old driver gave way to a 74-year-old cyclist, which left the cyclist in critical condition. The Road Accident Service has begun an investigation as the cyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, which may have contributed to the serious injuries. Similar accident statistics show that a disproportionate number of cyclists are injured in solo accidents, often due to deficiencies in infrastructure or weather conditions. This is also analyzed by the [Tagesschau, whereby around 27,400 cycling accidents without anyone else involved were counted.

Alarming numbers and challenges

The statistics speak for themselves: almost half of all cycling accidents that result in serious injuries are solo accidents. Cyclists who have had accidents often report dangers such as curbs and tram tracks as the main cause of their falls. Accident research therefore calls for insurers to improve the infrastructure in order to reduce such accidents. The winter months are particularly dangerous when wet, ice and snow make the cycle paths unsafe. The increasing popularity of cycling, including among older people, is also contributing to the increase in such accidents, as Baden-Württembergische Nachrichten shows.

Another worrying trend is the increase in injuries among Pedelec riders. These heavier and faster accelerating wheels often lead to more serious accidents. The combination of inadequate safety awareness, especially among young cyclists, and challenging weather conditions poses a serious danger. The findings from neighboring regions provide valuable information for preventative measures in Brandenburg.

It remains to be hoped that those responsible will take these developments into account in order to increase the safety of all cyclists and avoid such tragic incidents. The situation requires a joint approach by transport politicians, municipalities and committed citizens to further improve the infrastructure and raise awareness of road safety.
