Traffic chaos on the L63: single-lane bridge over the Black Elster!

From Monday, October 13, 2025, drivers will have to prepare for traffic restrictions on the L63 state road near Lauchhammer. The bridge over the Black Elster will probably only be accessible in one lane until October 24, 2025. The reason for this is in-depth investigations into the condition of the bridge. A traffic light system will regulate the flow of traffic during this time to ensure everything runs smoothly.

The bridge, which was built in 1974, consists of three spans and received a condition score of 2.3 in the last structural inspection, which means that it is considered stable. This study is part of a nationwide initiative in which the Brandenburg State Road Authority specifically tests prestressing steel bridges. It is clear that such regular inspections are crucial for the longevity and safety of bridges. The focus here is particularly on the tendons, as they represent a critical point.

Why are these examinations necessary?

The aim of the in-depth tests is to precisely check the condition of the installed tendons, as some bridges in the state of Brandenburg are considered to be at risk. There are currently 71 bridges at risk of stress corrosion cracking. Four years ago there were 81, which shows that some have already been successfully renewed. Ten new bridges have been built since then, and six more new bridges are planned by the end of the year. The bridges are checked under strict standards, so that, among other things, samples of materials are taken to analyze their properties in the laboratory.

The final structural inspection complies with the requirements of DIN 1076, which sets important standards for the testing and monitoring of engineering structures. These regulations are essential to guarantee public safety, especially after incidents such as the collapse of Dresden's Carola Bridge in September 2024, which renewed awareness of the urgency of regular renovations.

What's next?

The results of these extensive material analyzes will decide whether further measures are necessary and whether renovations to the bridge are necessary. In construction and building management, it is of utmost importance that such structures meet safety requirements and can be used safely by road users at all times.

A special challenge awaits all road users in Lauchhammer and the surrounding area in the coming weeks. The authorities ask for patience and understanding during the inspections, which ultimately serve to ensure the long-term preservation of the bridge and traffic safety.

Further information on the ongoing measures and the exact results of the audits can be found on the website of Niederlausitz Current and Brandenburg state government to find.
