Storm disaster in Berlin: woman dies, trees collapse!
On Monday, June 26, 2025, the capital region of Berlin and Brandenburg experienced a severe storm that brought dangerous situations for many residents. A brutal storm hit the region and tragically caused a woman to die when a tree fell on her car. Such unforeseen dangers illustrate the impact of the forces of nature that descended on the capital. But what exactly was going on?
The German Weather Service (DWD) issued comprehensive severe weather warnings for several districts of Brandenburg. Havelland, Oberhavel, Ostprignitz-Ruppin, Potsdam-Mittelmark, Prignitz and the city of Brandenburg were particularly affected. In Berlin, gusts with speeds of up to 110 km/h were measured, and from 5:30 p.m. meteorologists announced strong thunderstorms and storms. The DWD sounded the alarm for the south of Brandenburg from 4:30 p.m., where travelers and residents are waiting for heavy rain and hail with gusts of up to 90 km/h.
Dangers and damage
The main danger was breaking branches and falling trees, which was to happen in many regions. On the night of the thunderstorm, the storms moved eastward, but thunderstorms and showers initially persisted. Meteorologist Jacqueline Kernn provided information about the possible damage, which could include hail and minor floods in addition to the breaking of branches. Hailstones of up to 2 cm were expected in the east and even up to 4 cm in the southeast. Heavy rain with up to 30 liters/m² in the east and up to 40 liters/m² in the southeast was also approaching, which further increased the risk of flooding.
The highest wind speed measured on Monday was 108 km/h at the Free University of Berlin, while over 100 km/h was recorded in Tempelhof. This resulted in trees being snapped and branches being blown across the roads, severely impacting road safety. In the west of Brandenburg, the storms were expected from 5 p.m., so people could prepare for them in good time.
A look into the future
Although Monday's weather was marked by extreme conditions, the outlook for the coming days brings relief. On Friday, temperatures of up to 24 degrees with lots of clouds and occasional showers of rain are forecast, followed by a sunnier and drier weekend with temperatures between 26 and 30 degrees. So the weather will calm down again after these stormy days and we can look forward to the summer temperatures. But it is already important to remain vigilant today, because the ongoing warnings from the DWD and the information about possible weather phenomena make it clear once again: Nature is unpredictable.
For more information about current severe weather warnings and specific details about affected districts, we recommend taking a look at the official website NDR, which provides an overview of the various weather warnings.
Overall, it should be noted that the storm had devastating consequences over Berlin and Brandenburg, but the weather should soon become good again. However, don't be discouraged; A good hand in dealing with nature can't hurt!
