Bathing in danger: Health office warns of Blue Algae and E.Coli!

Beeskow, Deutschland - Bathing in the waters of Brandenburg must be enjoyed with caution at the moment. The health department of the Oder-Spree district has classified three bathing areas as questionable due to blue algae and increased E.Coli values. Certainly a warning for all those who want to refresh themselves in the cool floods.

The bathing spots in the Spreepark Beeskow are affected, at the Schwielochsee in Niewisch and the center of the lido Mitte in Bad Saarow. Warning signs are now attached to these places, which in particular advise families with children and sensitive people to bathing. It is particularly worrying that cyanobacteria have been detected in Beeskow and Niewisch, while the center of the lido Mitte in Bad Saarow is still not released for the public despite the good visual depth, since problematic e.Coli values were also found here.

The hard facts

A total of 34 bathing spots were tested in the district, and fortunately 31 of them received the predicate "without complaints". Positive water qualities can be found in the Grubensee, Great Stairsee and Scharmützelsee, where the depth of sight is up to two meters. The water temperatures are pleasant for the summer and vary between 20.2 ° C and 25.5 ° C, whereby the Schervenzsee is the warmest bathing lake with over 25 ° C.

  • affected bathing spots:
    • Beeskow (Spreepark)
    • Niewisch (Schwielochsee)
    • Bad Saarow (Central lido)
  • Positive bathing areas:
    • Grubensee
    • Large Treppelsee
    • Scharmützelsee

The problem with blue algae is not only an issue in Brandenburg. In Berlin, too, increased values for faecal bacteria and blue algae were found at twelve bathing areas. The high temperatures in particular this summer favor the growth of these microbes. For example, warnings at the Müggelsee in front of bathing, since e.coli bacteria were also detected here. In Brandenburg, however, only a bathing area, the Hohenjesarscher See in Alt Zeschdorf, is affected by such a warning.

What are blue algae?

A common misunderstanding is that blue algae are real algae. In fact, these are cyanobacteria that can occur in warm, flat waters in little wind and sunshine. They produce toxins that can be dangerous for humans and animals. There are signs of an occurrence of blue-green algae bluish-green cloudings, streak formation and even dead fish on the water surface. Health risks include skin and mucosal irritation, allergic reactions and, in the worst case, diarrhea or respiratory diseases, especially in children and pregnant women.

The health department will continue to monitor and recommend water quality to avoid cloudy waters and areas with green streaks in order to avoid health risks. On a trip to the next bathing spots, the bathers should always keep the current warnings in mind.

While some bathing spots are safe and inviting, it is advisable to find out about the water quality beforehand and to visit official tests. After all, you want to dive into the cool water carefree and enjoy the summer! In this sense: stay healthy and careful.
