No room for a new nursing home in Templin: City council sobered up!
The city of Templin is increasingly faced with an urgent question regarding the care provision of its older citizens. At the end of last year, the UBW parliamentary group asked the city council for sufficient nursing home places in the city. The proposal to instruct the administration to find a more suitable site for a new nursing home with around 200 places was accepted on February 26th. But recent developments are now raising alarm bells.
At the last meeting of the urban development committee it was announced that there was no building space available in the inner area of Templin for such a project. Tim Markwardt, the area manager for building and property management, broke down the required space: For a single-story construction you need around 5,500 m², for a two-story construction you need around 4,000 m². Unfortunately, the city cannot access any free building sites that meet these requirements.
The situation of care in the region
The Uckermark district, to which Templin belongs, currently has around 117,336 residents, of which around 34,534 are over 65 years old. This means that around 29.4% of the population are seniors. According to current statistics, there are around 12,438 people in need of care in the region who are dependent on appropriate care. This corresponds to a coverage rate of only around 42.5 care places per 1,000 residents aged 65 and over, which underlines the urgency of the situation.
The care infrastructure in Templin is challenging, especially when you consider that most of those in need of care - around 70.6% of the over 4 million people aged 60 and over - are cared for in their own homes. This shows a trend towards outpatient care, but the static places in nursing homes are far from sufficient to cover demand. In total there are 35 nursing homes in the region with 1,467 available places.
A look at possible alternatives
The committee members expressed disappointment, especially since the audit assignment was declared completed. No further discussion appears to be in sight for the time being. The city's information template will be on the agenda of the city council meeting on July 16th, where the current situation will be discussed again.
The challenges in nursing care should not be underestimated and require quick action. Templin's elderly population has a right to appropriate care placements and it is to be hoped that solutions can be found before it is too late.
