New nursing campus in Prenzlau: renovated prefabricated buildings come to life!

In the Uckermark there are exciting developments surrounding the former GDR prefabricated buildings. The Prenzlau housing association has found creative solutions to convert vacant properties into attractive forms of housing. Nordkurier reports that the apartments on the 6th floor are often difficult to access as they can only be reached via stairs. To change this, an elevator was installed between the apartment blocks, making access to the upper floors much easier.

As part of the renovation work, partition walls were broken down on the 6th floor of house numbers 17 to 23 to create eleven new individual apartments with a respectable 21 m². These apartments, which opened in summer 2023, are looked after by the IHS Frey nursing service as a “nursing campus”. The second phase of this innovative project will be ready for occupancy in mid-November and promises to offer even more amenities.

A local nursing association

The new section includes a revised spatial concept that includes a large lounge, a communal kitchen, a therapy room and an office for the nursing staff. Nine rooms, each measuring 21 to 24 m² and with a private bathroom, have been set up. With all these changes, one staircase remains open as an escape route, while the other three are used for storage rooms. The investment for the renovation is around 800,000 euros. The tenants currently have no disadvantages from the modernization of the apartments due to rent reductions or increases.

What is particularly pleasing is that four of the nine new apartments on the 6th floor are already reserved for those in need of care. Despite the lively interest in the places for the nursing campus, the shortage of trained nursing staff remains a challenge. The offer includes all forms of care, with the exception of intensive care with artificial ventilation. In order to guarantee the residents the best possible care, the nursing campus is staffed around the clock by IHS employees.

The goal of modernization

The renovation of the stairs and entrances as well as the redesign of the sidewalks are planned, which should further increase the quality of life in the buildings. The project was also awarded the “Good as usual” quality seal and is entered into the “Empty becomes more” competition. The future looks promising and could enrich the region sustainably.

In summary, it can be said that the conversion of the GDR prefabricated buildings into nursing campuses is showing great progress. Modern concepts not only improve the living space, but also create an important service for the community.
