Cooking together in Prenzlau: Strong togetherness for everyone!

In Prenzlau, togetherness is very important! At the “Prenzlau is(s)t…” event series, different generations and cultures come together to cook, chop and simply have a good time. Pieter Wolters spoke very positively about the initiative at the last event in mid-December. The hosts, BaseCamp and the Evangelical City Mission, have once again put together a great program. Mayor Hendrik Sommer didn't miss the opportunity to take part and brought a box of fresh apple juice as a thank you to the hard-working participants.

This is not just an event for foodies - the event attracts seniors, children, locals and refugees alike. Together they chop vegetables and peel potatoes. For the little guests, Jacqueline Kretschmer from “Diester” offers creative painting and craft activities that the children have a lot of fun with. This means that young and old can easily talk to each other.

A look at the future

The series of events has been part of the community for two years and is organized by the Engagierte Stadt Prenzlau network. Sandra Strathmann and Alexandra Martinot, the network's coordinators, have already set the dates for 2026:

  • 25. Februar: Lebensschule
  • 29. April: „Diester“ und Kreisvolkshochschule
  • 24. Juni: Kulturwerk im Glashaus
  • 26. August: St. Jacobi
  • 28. Oktober: BaseCamp und Evangelische Stadtmission
  • 16. Dezember: Bürgerhaus beim Netzwerk Gesunde Kinder

Anyone interested is cordially invited to take part in these events in order to make new acquaintances and find out about the various offers.

Strengthen community and integration

The importance of such initiatives is also emphasized in a current report from the Bertelsmann Foundation, which deals with the reception and integration of refugees. As part of a practical research project, over 36 municipalities in Germany were examined. The aim is to strengthen municipal resilience to the challenges of integration. Commitment, networking and the right governance structure are crucial to creating sustainable conditions on site and making the offer of help more effective. This could also be useful for Prenzlau, where citizens want to be actively involved in social life.

The local network meetings, which take place twice a year, offer a platform for exchange and the development of new projects. The next meeting is on October 16th, where topics such as planning for Women's Week 2026 and other community projects will be discussed. If you are interested, please contact Alexandra Martinot to find out more about the network's dedicated work.

With such strong local commitment, Prenzlau shows how community projects not only promote social cohesion, but can also make a valuable contribution to integration. Another example of how chopping and cooking together not only enriches the palate, but also the interaction, shows that “there is something going on” in the Uckermark.
