Blood donations in Schwedt: 108 lifesavers on the Blood Brothers Tour!
On June 14, 2025, the 17th edition of the Blood Brothers Tour took place in Schwedt, an event that was not only intended to be fun, but also aimed to draw important attention to the importance of blood donation. The organizers had a good hand because a total of 108 blood donations were collected. Of these, 35 were first-time and second-time donors, showing that interest in blood donation continues despite challenges. Particularly pleasing: 83 people had previously registered online to donate, while many spontaneous visitors came to have their blood drawn.
“Blood donations are particularly important in summer and are often in short supply,” notes Steffi Kronemann, press officer for the DRK Nordost. However, demographic change shows that older generations in particular are becoming more and more reluctant to donate, while the younger generations are becoming more and more reluctant. This is a problem that is observed not only in Schwedt, but also throughout Germany. Georg Götz, chairman of the DRK blood donation service, emphasizes that cross-generational commitment is necessary to increase the number of donors. World Blood Donor Day on June 14, 2025 once again underlined the importance of regular donations for medical care.
The motorcycle ride: community and commitment
The 70-kilometer motorcycle ride was another highlight of the Blutsbrüdertour. 144 motorcycles took part and the route led from Schwedt via Berkholz, Meyenburg, Frauenhagen to Angermünde and back again. With an impressive number of around 400 guests in the Oder Center, the event was a real attraction. Ralf Schäpe, the club boss of the Blutsbrüdertour, worked closely with the DRK to realize this successful campaign.
The need for blood donations
Especially in the summer months, the willingness to donate blood is often lower because many people are on vacation. According to ZDF reports, young people's willingness to donate is particularly declining, which is cause for concern. In a year with over 3 million visits to DRK blood donation appointments, the numbers show that the decline in first-time donors is alarming. According to statistics, the number of first-time donors fell by 6% between 2023 and 2024. However, in the context of demographic changes in society, the need for blood supplies for medical care will be no less urgent.
Donor blood groups such as 0 negative are particularly in demand. They are needed all year round - especially in the hot summer months when many people donate less due to heat waves. “Blood donations save lives,” says Steffi Kronemann, summarizing the central message. We would like to see more young people willing to take part in this valuable task.
As the Blood Brothers Tour shows, donating blood can be a simple and communal act that both strengthens the community and enables life-saving. Take advantage of the opportunity to serve the community and save lives with a small amount of effort!
