Fences from GDR times in Bergfelde: dismantling causes excitement!

The changes are noticeable in Bergfelde. Disturbed earth, cut branches and protruding stones show that hard work is going on here. The reason for this excitement is the dismantling work on fences that are on public property. As the Märkische Allgemeine reports, the city of Hohen Neuendorf has asked its citizens to dismantle their fences if they are on city property.

The problem is not new. The city has been carrying out such measures since 2020 and so far an impressive 77 fences have been dismantled throughout the city. A new example is a resident of Mühlenbecker Strasse who has now built a new fence on a fresh foundation - a financial undertaking of around 6,000 euros. “I didn’t know about the problem when I bought it,” she says, because the previous owner would have had to fulfill this important obligation. The old fence is now in the bushes on the other side of her house.

A hot topic in the neighborhood

Although the dismantling is necessary, there is a certain reluctance among residents to talk about the subject of fences. This problem is also reflected in the different reactions of the neighbors: some decide to just put the fence back, while others remove everything. On Ernststrasse, a neighbor reports about a new hunter's fence that is almost two meters further back. Definitely a hot topic!

But the city doesn't just plan to tear down the fences. The areas kept clear will be used in the future for rainwater infiltration, new trees or pipes. There are even discussions about building a main road or a cycle path in the region. All of this fits into the larger plan to increase the quality of life in Hohen Neuendorf and promote sustainable land use.

Sustainable settlement development

The need for sustainable settlement development is becoming increasingly important. Taking into account demographic change and the high costs of infrastructure, the limits of land use must also be kept in mind with a clear target of a maximum of 30 hectares per day dstgb.de is to be read. Local decision-makers are required to protect natural resources and use them sustainably. This includes not only the identification and closure of vacant lots, but also the innovative use of brownfield sites.

The BMBF's REFINA funding priority program, which supports sustainable land management in cities and communities, makes an effective contribution to implementing these goals. The goal: a harmonious coexistence between economic development and environmental protection. Because one thing is clear: sustainable action and economic development can go hand in hand.

An exciting process is currently being developed in Hohen Neuendorf that aims to promote the quality of life of citizens and at the same time take ecological ideas into account. Stay tuned – there’s a lot to watch here!
