Weseram revives traditional crafts: new wool washing factory takes off!
In the tranquil district of Weseram, in the municipality of Roskow in the Potsdam-Mittelmark district, a long tradition is being revived: the establishment of a wool washing factory, supported by the Brandenburg Ministry of Agriculture as part of the LEADER program. This was recently announced and promises to be a valuable addition to regional wool production. Cityreport reports that The factory is set up in a former Skuddenhof stable building, creating a complete value chain from sheared wool to spun wool thread.
The Skuddenhof, run by Katja and Christoph Behling, breeds the local Skudde sheep breed, which is known for its fine wool. There are currently a pleasing 19 lambs on the farm, three of which were born recently. Their goal for the spring is to have a total of 50 lambs. The Märkische Allgemeine reports that The Skudden are an endangered breed that originally comes from East Prussia and the Baltics.
Sustainable agriculture in focus
The new wool washing factory shares the stage with the aim of increasing the processing quality of the wool. Not only is the wool processed for our own products, but it is also offered as a service to other sheep farms. The project is being pushed forward with financial support of around 33,000 euros from the Ministry of Agriculture, the total costs of which are around 83,000 euros. Renovation work, including for the washing and drying system, is already in full swing.
The sustainable aspect of sheep farming plays a major role in this project. Time Threads highlights that Sustainable agriculture not only benefits the environment, but also helps preserve local traditions and creates jobs. Sheep farming supports the maintenance of the cultural landscape and protects biodiversity through grazing on grassy areas.
Diverse products and offers
The Skuddenhof not only offers its guests the opportunity to learn about sheep farming and product processing, but also produces high-quality meat, dairy and wool products. The wool is regularly sheared by hand and marketed in various forms, including filling for duvets. The consumption of Skuddenfleisch is very popular, and not just at Easter: the preparation options range from roast lamb with herbs to roasted ribs.
The Bohlings' sheep farming has a long tradition that is rooted in Brandenburg, and with the establishment of the wool washing factory it is now being further consolidated and modernized. In the end, not only will the quality of the products increase, but awareness of regional and sustainable agriculture will also increase. In this way, Weseram shows that old traditions can be successfully carried into the future.
