Big cat at Geiseltalsee: Police warn of dangerous puma!
A big cat that may be a puma has been spotted at Geiseltalsee, one of Germany's largest artificial lakes. This sighting took place in Braunsbedra in the Saale district, not far from Leipzig and Halle an der Saale. Police have warned the public to avoid the area and not approach the animal. Even if you see something, call 112 immediately SWR3 reported.
The first indications of the big cat came to the fire department on Monday. So far, no one has reported missing such an animal, which has prompted the authorities to specifically search for private owners and animal parks in the area. Head of Public Order Sabine Faulstich confirmed that the video showing the animal is not fake and the animal is definitely not a wild boar, which makes a warning all the more important.
Increased security measures
In order to keep the situation under control, a helicopter is in use to monitor the area. The Saalekreis has asked its citizens to avoid meadows and forests in the region for the time being. The aim is to prevent possible incidents that could occur if someone approaches the animal. Experts are analyzing the situation thoroughly and keeping the population informed via the Nina warning app MDR.
The situation is reminiscent of an incident two years ago when a wild boar was mistakenly classified as a lion. There was a lot of excitement back then when the supposed big cat later turned out to be a completely harmless wild boar. This story has caused many to look at the current sighting with a critical eye.
Regarding wild cats in Germany, it is important to mention that pumas, even though they represent other big cats, are classified as small cats. There is a lot of information about the distribution of the wildcat, especially from Bavaria, where massive species protection measures are being carried out. Here the population has persisted in large forest areas, but stable populations have not yet been achieved Federal Nature Conservation Association informed.
The situation remains exciting and we will continue to follow developments surrounding the big cat at Geiseltalsee. Authorities are working hard to find out exactly what animal it is and how the situation can be safely resolved. Until then, the most important thing is: stay careful and keep your distance from the wilderness!
