Mobile slaughter in Wildau: Animal welfare is finally a priority!

On October 28, 2025, a mobile slaughter vehicle was presented in Wildau that enables animal-friendly slaughter directly in the stable or on the pasture. This pioneering project, supported by the Ministry of the Environment, aims to minimize stress on animals. Because while the slaughter day takes place directly in their familiar surroundings, the animals can be slaughtered in a quiet atmosphere. Tagesschau reports that….

The mobile slaughter vehicle, which can hardly be distinguished from a conventional panel van from the outside, meets strict hygiene standards. The entire slaughter process is clearly structured: First, the animal is led into a cage and stunned with a bolt gun before it is transported into the slaughter wagon. This method can not only reduce animal stress, but also contributes to higher meat quality. However, mobile slaughter is currently still a niche, as most farm animals are processed in large slaughterhouses. Vetline points out that….

The challenges of mobile slaughter

In Brandenburg, a maximum of six animals per day can be slaughtered with such a mobile vehicle. But there are some hurdles: there must be a nearby slaughter site and it is mandatory that a veterinarian is present at every slaughter. This staff shortage in the veterinary offices increases costs for farmers and makes it difficult for them to accept the offer.

The Conference of Agriculture Ministers has already taken steps to promote mobile slaughter. So on September 16, 2022, it was decided to support them directly on the farm of origin in order to avoid long animal transport and increase regional added value. Vetline highlights that…. At recent conferences, it was also emphasized how important it is to maintain regional slaughterhouses and make them sustainable.

Support and opportunities from the state government

The state government of Schleswig-Holstein has even initiated a funding program that will also support investments in mobile slaughter units for pigs and poultry from 2025. In this way, both animal welfare and climate protection are to be promoted. Agriculture Minister Werner Schwarz emphasizes that this also opens up new economic opportunities for small slaughterhouses in direct marketing. LKSH states that….

With a possible grant of up to 50% of the eligible expenses, applicants have a total of 300,000 euros available to purchase the required mobile units. The presence of an official veterinarian is mandatory in order to maintain high standards.

In summary, the introduction of mobile slaughter in Brandenburg could not only improve the welfare of the animals, but also be an answer to the problems of the agricultural crises in recent years. The potential is therefore obvious: Agriculture that becomes more regional, sustainable and animal-friendly – that would be a real win for everyone!
