Winter weather at BER: Travelers have to prepare for delays!
In Schönefeld, at BER Airport, it looks like a winter wonderland with the departures. But while the festive mood takes off, travelers can expect slight delays. The temperatures are falling and so some pilots have decided to de-ice their aircraft before take-off, which causes a few minutes delay. However, no major delays were reported at the airport MAZ reported. Thanks to good winter service preparation, operations have been running smoothly and routinely so far.
Around 63,000 travelers are expected at BER Airport on Saturday. However, the airport operators urge caution and ask passengers to prepare for winter conditions when arriving.
Winter challenges for air traffic
However, the winter conditions do not only affect Schönefeld. In many parts of Germany, snow and freezing rain are causing significant disruption to air traffic. As the daily news reported that around 20 flights were canceled at BER Airport on Sunday. Landings were limited to 20 per hour to ensure safe handling, as up to 40 landings per hour would theoretically be possible.
There were also major restrictions at other large airports such as Frankfurt and Munich. In Frankfurt, over 120 of 1,090 planned takeoffs and landings were canceled, mainly due to problems such as poor visibility and prolonged de-icing work. In Munich only one runway was open for operations, which led to the cancellation of further flights.
Snowstorm causes traffic chaos
Winter weather conditions are not just limited to air traffic. Slippery roads cause numerous traffic accidents. The German Weather Service warns and advises drivers to be particularly careful. Many accidents have already been recorded, including serious incidents on motorways where vehicles with summer tires skidded. Drivers and pedestrians should be extremely careful, as is the case Euronews reported.
In the midst of the winter chaos, the call remains to stay at home wherever possible. The winter conditions not only bring challenges in air traffic, but also in the everyday lives of people all over Germany. Passengers are therefore well advised to find out about their flights and the traffic situation in advance.
