S-Bahn chaos from October 28th: Longer travel times for commuters!

The commuters from Königs Wusterhausen are looking forward to the coming days with excitement, because as of today, October 28, 2025, the timetables for several S-Bahn lines in Berlin are changing. The MAZ reports that rail traffic south of the Baumschulenweg station will be restricted due to urgently needed switch and signaling work. This measure applies until November 3rd.

Overall, the lines S45, S46, S47, S8, S85 and S9 are affected. It will be particularly inconvenient for passengers on the S46 and S8 because the trains are completely canceled between Berlin-Grünau and Baumschulenweg. However, replacement buses are available and run every 5 to 15 minutes. The S46 stops at Adlershof, Johannisthal and Schöneweide, while the S8 and S85 commute between Baumschulenweg and Treptower Park.

Details about the timetable changes

The S45 and S9 also have to expect restrictions. There is no train connection between Grünbergallee and Baumschulenweg. A replacement bus, the S9X, will run every 10 to 15 minutes, but without stops in Grünbergallee, Altglienicke and Johannisthal. The S9A bus stops only about 300 meters from Johannisthal S-Bahn station, which is additionally inconvenient for commuters.

The situation of the S47 is also tense. Passengers do not have to prepare for any service between Spindlersfeld and Baumschulenweg. A replacement bus is offered every 20 to 30 minutes and stops at Bärenlauchstraße, Bruno-Bürgel-Weg and Schöneweide. Fortunately, the journey time by bus is expected to be 18 minutes, which is a significant increase compared to the regular 9 minutes.

Background of the letters S

An interesting aspect that should not go unmentioned at this time is the letter S itself. It is the nineteenth letter of the Latin alphabet and is used in various languages around the world. While the spelling in different alphabets has changed over the years, the sound always remains similar. Historically, the letter S has its origins in characters such as the Northwest Semitic šîn, which once represented a pictogram for a tooth. In Greek it was adopted as sigma (Σ), which led us to its current form in the Latin alphabet, which arose simply by omitting one of the strokes of sigma. So you can see that even in everyday traffic, the connection to history is never completely lost.

For commuters who now have to expect longer journey times, it remains to be hoped that these restrictions will bring about the necessary progress in the region's rail network. Until then, it's important to keep an eye on the replacement buses so that you don't miss the next connection.
