Dahme-Spreewald starts an electrified future: 16 new electric buses in use!
In the Dahme-Spreewald district, the switch to environmentally friendly mobility is in full swing. Today 16 electric buses from the manufacturer BYD were ceremoniously presented in Mittenwalde, which are intended to revolutionize local public transport. Around 40 guests from politics, administration and business came to the presentation of the 12 meter long vehicles, each of which offers space for up to 71 people - both seats and standing room are available. These buses are equipped with innovative technologies that, for example, replace conventional exterior mirrors with cameras. Each trip will offer a guaranteed minimum range of 300 kilometers, and the buses can be recharged in just two hours.
Federal Minister of Transport, Patrick Schnieder (CDU), was enthusiastic about this step towards meeting climate targets in transport. Despite the tight budget situation, the district is continuing to invest in the future and is supporting the purchase with around 4.4 million euros. The total investment amounts to around 11 million euros, with the project being supported by the Federal Ministry of Transport (BMV) is funded with a total of 5.692 million euros. These funds come from the German Recovery and Resilience Plan (DARP) and the European Recovery and Resilience Facilities (ARF).
On the way to climate neutrality
The measures in the area of electromobility are not unique to the Dahme-Spreewald district. The goal nationwide is to have every second city bus run electrically by 2030. The current number of buses with electric drives is expected to more than triple, which would provide significant relief for the environment. The Transport sector is currently responsible for around 22 percent of total CO2 emissions in Germany, and a clear need for action has been identified. With a total funding volume of 1.75 billion euros provided by the funding program for environmentally friendly buses, numerous transport companies can switch to new, alternative drives.
The focus is not just on electric buses: the conversion of conventional buses to alternative drives such as biomethane and fuel cell buses is also supported. This is happening as part of the third round of funding for climate-friendly buses, which is accepting applications until September 10, 2023. The goal is clear: greenhouse gas neutrality should be achieved by 2045 at the latest, and the individual steps in this direction are of great importance.
The assessment of emissions shows that developments are necessary. According to current projections, emissions from the transport sector will significantly exceed the set targets of 85 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent by 2030, despite all efforts. Fast, effective measures are needed here to achieve the climate goals.
With the introduction of electric buses in the Dahme-Spreewald district, a concrete and important step towards environmentally friendly mobility is being taken. The combination of political will, financial support and commitment to climate goals could prove to be a model for a sustainable future. Everyone involved must work on this in order to actually achieve the necessary energy transition in transport - and in the best case scenario, the route via Brandenburg and beyond can become a model for other regions.
