E-scooter crash in Forst: Injured driver and increasing number of accidents!

There was an unfortunate accident in Forst on Wednesday afternoon when a 40-year-old e-scooter driver fell on Gubener Straße. The man sustained injuries and was immediately taken to hospital. Niederlausitz Aktuell reports that the e-scooter remained roadworthy despite the accident and only minor material damage in the double-digit range was caused. The incident occurred around 11:50 a.m.

Despite the concerns that such accidents cause, another message must also be noted. The number of e-scooter accidents in the region has risen sharply in recent years. In 2024, almost 12,000 accidents were registered in Germany alone, which corresponds to an increase of 27% compared to the previous year. Tagesschau reports that young drivers are particularly affected, and alcohol is often involved.

Accident statistics and their effects

A look at the statistics shows that the number of accidents is constantly increasing. In 2024, 27 people died in e-scooter accidents, 1,500 were seriously injured and around 11,400 were slightly injured. E-scooter traffic was permitted in Germany in 2019 and has been polarizing ever since. While e-scooters have become more popular in recent years - in 2023 there were almost 990,000 e-scooters on the road, mostly privately owned - the dangers have also increased. [Test.de](https://www.test.de/Strassenverkehr- Zahl-der-E-Scooter-Unfaelle-stieg-deutlich-6236400-0/) highlights that almost half of the drivers involved in accidents are under 25 years old.

What is particularly alarming is that more than half of e-scooter accidents are caused by collisions with other road users, mostly cars. The most common cause of accidents is incorrect use of roadways or sidewalks. Around 21% of accidents occur because drivers ignore road traffic rules. Driving under the influence also contributes to 12% of accidents.

Safety measures and tips for drivers

Given these numbers, it is advisable to exercise caution as an e-scooter driver. Safety tips recommended by traffic experts include wearing a helmet, using bike lanes correctly, and obeying speed limits and traffic laws. Regardless of whether you drive your own e-scooter or use a borrowed one, you should always inspect the vehicle before driving. Many models have minimal safety standards and may have defects that increase risk.

In Forst itself, the incident with the e-scooter was not the only news item of the week. On Tuesday there was an attempted break-in at a store in Hänchen, where goods worth several hundred euros were stolen. And in Kolkwitz on Tuesday there was a collision in a parking lot between a MERCEDES car and a VW, fortunately without any injuries.

The development around e-scooters and their accident rates remains an important topic that will further fuel the discussion about road safety. Each of us must be aware of our responsibilities on the roads, especially given the growing number of e-scooters and the risks associated with them.
