Senftenberg Hospital celebrates 135 years of tireless commitment!
On November 3, 2025 the time has come: Senftenberg Hospital will celebrate its 135th anniversary. A long history that began in 1890 when the first miners' hospital opened in the city. Since then, the hospital has not only been a place of healing, but has also witnessed many changes and developments. Originally equipped with only 27 beds, the house soon had to find solutions for the increasing number of patients, as LR-Online reports.
The hospital's beginnings were modest, but the need was quickly recognized. As early as 1886, the mining auditor Koch expressed a strong desire for a hospital for the miners. This led to the establishment of the hospital in 1888, and it was not an easy journey. During the First World War, the facility fought against a shortage of personnel and cared for countless war wounded. In 1924 the hospital finally got its characteristic look with the memorable clinker brick facade.
A constant change
After the war years, the hospital also underwent a remarkable transformation. Professor Max Grauhan took over the medical direction in 1929 and modernized the surgical methods. The Second World War presented another challenge when a bomb-proof emergency operating room had to be set up in the basement. But the house remained resilient and underwent further innovations in the 1950s, including the construction of a children's ward.
In the 1990s, the Senftenberg, Lauchhammer and Klettwitz hospitals merged to form the Niederlausitz Clinic. The final step into modern times was taken in 2000 with an impressive new building that required an investment of 53 million marks. This was also reflected in the renaming of the facility to Sana Kliniken Niederlausitz in 2021, after the search for a strategic partner began in 2020.
Modern medical care
Today, Senftenberg Hospital enjoys an excellent reputation and offers comprehensive medical care. The range of services extends from a regional trauma center and a stroke unit to intensive care medicine, orthopedics, trauma surgery and neurology. Particularly recently, a lot of emphasis has been placed on preventive measures. As part of the quality management policy, care is taken to ensure that vulnerable patient groups, such as children and people in need of help, are protected from violence and abuse, as the German Hospital Directory platform highlights. The implementation of training and information materials are just some of the measures to raise awareness among staff.
Looking into the future, it remains to be seen what further developments the Senftenberg Hospital will take in the next few years. One thing is certain, however: the house's long history is proof of its importance in the region and its tireless commitment to the health of the population.
