Senftenberg shows the flag: citizens are setting an example for democracy!

A strong signal for democracy was sent in Senftenberg on August 9, 2025. Under the motto “Senftenberg remains colorful”, around 30 citizens gathered at the weekly market to protest together against the registration of an information stand by right-wing extremists. The campaign lasted from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and was supported by the Partnership for Democracy of the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district, which provided information material and organizational commitment. The commitment in Senftenberg shows how important solidarity against extremism is.

The participants had the opportunity to immerse themselves in numerous conversations with market visitors, who responded positively to the initiative. A passer-by expressly thanked the organizers and participants for their efforts. The atmosphere was peaceful and encouraging, which underlined the message: Senftenberg is colorful and should stay colorful.

Various activities at the Altmarkt

In addition to the main campaign, other events took place. The “Grandmas Against the Right” held a vigil to draw attention to the dangers of right-wing extremism. The Left party also had its own stand where it displayed its political messages. In addition, Antifa was present with an independent action, which impressively illustrated the complexity of the commitment and the desire to set an example.

The participation and presence of all supporters, from the district to the various factions to the citizens themselves, were crucial to the success of the campaign. It became clear that cooperation at many levels – be it through logistical assistance or direct support – is essential to send a strong message against extremism.

David W., a committed citizen, expressed his confidence: "This action shows that we in Senftenberg stand together for our values and fight for democratic coexistence. Even if there are challenges, we are ready to take a stand against extremism."

The Partnership for Democracy in the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district is also supported by funds from the Federal Ministry of Education, Family, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth and remains committed to giving new impetus to democratic participation in the Senftenberg area.
