Nazi attack on youth club in Lauchhammer triggers alarm!

On the night of November 2nd, the youth club on John-Schehr-Strasse in Lauchhammer was the target of a ruthless attack. Unknown perpetrators left chaos behind by tearing down the mailbox, cutting cables, breaking a window and putting graffiti on the walls. The total damage is estimated at around 1,000 euros. Luckily no one was injured, but this event sheds a worrying light on the current situation in the region.

The perpetrators left signs that suggest a right-wing extremist background. Abbreviations such as “JN” for Young Nationalists and the threat of “boxing ticks” were sprayed on the walls. Those responsible for the Safe Places South Brandenburg initiative classify this incident as a worrying “next level of violence”. They see the attack as part of a growing number of attacks on alternative and left-wing projects that have increasingly occurred in Lauchhammer in recent months, including the youth clubs Bunt-Rock and Südclub, both of which are founding members of the initiative.

Increasing violence against social institutions

The youth club in Lauchhammer is not the only place that suffers from these right-wing motivated attacks. In the period from May 2024 to March 2025, 20 right-wing crimes were registered against youth and cultural centers in southern Brandenburg, including attacks on the Zelle 79 house project in Cottbus and the Jamm youth club in Senftenberg. According to the Victim Perspective advice center, this is symptomatic of the nationwide increase in right-wing violence, which is also affecting other federal states, as reports from [nd-aktuell] and [akweb] document.

The affected initiatives organize their protection and work closely with anti-fascist groups. There are alarms that the attackers are getting younger and younger, with hooded perpetrators being used in some cases. This is particularly alarming because attacks on alternative projects have already been recorded in Cottbus, led by a growing number of young neo-Nazis in groups such as Elblandrevolte and III. be fueled away.

Political and social backgrounds

The political situation is tense. There are reports of the AfD's increasing influence among young voters, marked by fears such as war and economic uncertainty. A trend study shows that psychological pressure among young people is high and many are worried about the future. The city administration in Cottbus is planning future cuts in youth social work, which could further aggravate the situation for alternative projects.

Ricarda Budke, spokeswoman for the Safe Places South Brandenburg initiative, calls for more protection and financial security for threatened places as well as consistent prosecution of right-wing violence in Brandenburg. The situation requires urgent action to secure the above-mentioned freedoms and to ensure a safe environment for the people affected.

The attacks in Lauchhammer and the surrounding area are therefore not just local events, but part of a worrying trend that affects society as a whole. It is high time to sound the alarm bells and take joint responsibility to resolutely counter these right-wing extremist attacks.
