Burglar in Elsterwerda: Bathtub and sink disappeared!

A special kind of criminal activity is currently causing a stir in Elsterwerda. On Saturday morning, December 6th, an astonishing break-in occurred in an apartment on Berliner Straße. Not only valuables were stolen, but also an entire bathtub and a sink. The police are surprised at the choice of the stolen goods and suspect that the items could possibly be used at a hen party. The door to the apartment was significantly damaged in the break-in. The investigation is in full swing to clear up the background to this strange theft, as lr-online.de reports.

But that is not the only incident that has brought Elsterwerda into focus in the last few days. Another report concerns a break-in in the gallery rooms on Main Street, which took place on Tuesday morning. Unknown perpetrators violently broke open the front door and stole a donation box from the local association, causing damage amounting to several hundred euros. The criminal police have also started investigating here and are looking for clues about the perpetrators, as niederlausitz-aktuell.de explains.

A wide range of criminal activities

The two burglaries are part of a larger problem, as crime in Germany, especially residential burglaries, has experienced a worrying increase since the corona pandemic. According to the latest statistics, there were approximately 119,000 thefts in and out of homes in 2023, with around 77,800 of these cases classified as residential burglaries. These are numbers that make you think, especially in a country where the sense of security has been severely compromised in recent years, as statista.com shows.

The form of burglary is often forced entry, which results in material damage and a violation of privacy. The impact on the victims can be serious, as the loss of sense of security and the psychological consequences cannot be underestimated. While the clearance rate for residential burglaries in Germany is only 14.9 percent, there are big differences between the federal states and cities. Bavaria has the highest clearance rate of 25.8 percent, while Bremen is at the bottom of the list with only 6.5 percent.

Insights into local crimes

In addition to the break-ins mentioned above, there are more recent reports in the region that show that security levels in the area remain tense. In Herzberg, for example, a break-in was reported in an arbor in which several garden tools were stolen. There was also an accident in Merzdorf between a truck and a VOLVO SUV, which caused material damage of around 2,000 euros, but no one was injured.

The increase in crime requires the police and citizens to be vigilant and increase their security measures. At a time when fear of break-ins is omnipresent, it remains to be seen how the situation in Elsterwerda will develop and whether the police can quickly bring the perpetrators to justice.
