Cultural heritage of the Sorbs
The Lower Lusatia region, which forms the northern part of Lusatia, has a rich history to offer. The Sorbs, also known as Wends, are a Slavic people who have lived in this area for over 1000 years. The name Lausitz comes from the Old Sorbian word “ług” and can be translated as “swampy lowland covered with forest”. The Sorbs refer to themselves in their native language asSerby, while the term Wenden, which goes back to Roman historians, is often perceived as derogatory in Upper Lusatia.
In the city of Bautzen, which is considered the political and cultural center of the Sorbs, there are important institutions for the Sorbian language and culture. There are schools and kindergartens there where Sorbian is taught. The complex history of the Sorbs and Germans in the Bautzen area is visible through bilingual signage and the inclusion of Sorbian concerns in the municipal statutes. Bautzen.de reports on how these two ethnic groups have lived together harmoniously for generations.
