From November 4th to 9th, 2025, the 35th Film Festival in Cottbus will take over and bring work from Central and Eastern Europe to Brandenburg. With around 150 films from 40 production countries, there is something for every taste. The event will particularly focus on the anniversary celebration of the Serbian program “Łužycafilm”, a network for Sorbian-German film and media professionals that has been active for ten years. The network's spokeswoman, Silke Laubenstein-Pohlenz from the Foundation for the Sorbian People, is proud of the milestones achieved.
But it's not just cinematography that's on the program. The Sorbian animated film “Ako su hyšći žywe byli wódne muže” premiered one day before the official start of the festival. This edited version of a short animated film, which was produced in the DEFA studio, was shown at the premiere at OBENKINO and was shown with German subtitles in the Lower Sorbian language version, as rbb-online.de reports.
A focus on diversity
The festival aims to do more than just show films; It should be a place for encounters, exchanges and creative collaboration. With a successful mix of films that address social issues and take up cultural nuances, the machinations of the film industry in Central and Eastern Europe are in the foreground. Another highly interesting aspect is the exchange between old and new, tradition and modernity, which is discussed in many of the works shown.
What is particularly noteworthy is how the festival promotes exchange between the filmmakers and the audience. Discussion rounds and Q&A sessions offer guests the opportunity to gain deeper insights into the creative processes of the filmmakers. This type of interaction is highly valued by participants and creates a lively atmosphere.
Cinema in transition
With an outlook on the future of film, which also finds new opportunities in globalization, the festival offers a platform to reflect on developments in the cinema sector. Refined techniques, new narrative forms and the influences of digitalization bring a breath of fresh air into the stages of artistic creation. In keeping with this, the festival's productions also explore how cinema is developing in the digital age.
The festival in Cottbus is a holiday for cinema culture and will delight not only cinephiles. It is also an opportunity to discover regional talent while promoting familiarity with film streams from the East. The anticipation of a colorful mix of genre highlights and cultural moments is palpable and shows how lively and versatile the film medium is.
The 35th Film Festival Cottbus promises exciting days full of film art that will make visitors' hearts beat faster. /Wikipedia and GitHub have much more information.
