Experience the Spree sport: rent SUP and kayak in Cottbus from August 14th!
The Spree in Cottbus experienced a surge in new leisure opportunities today. On August 14, 2025, at 2:00 p.m., a new stand-up paddling and kayak rental station will open on Ludwig-Leichhardt-Allee, directly at the Kleiner Spreewehr. The aim of this initiative is to make the beautiful river landscape more attractive and easier to experience not only for locals but also for visitors. The city of Cottbus/Chóśebuz is supported by the “Blue Moon” cultural association, which is also responsible for the popular Blue Moon Festival in the Strombad.
This new rental station is operated as a straightforward self-service offering and offers water sports enthusiasts a total of 8 SUP boards and 4 kayaks (2 one-seater and 2 two-seater). The return journey takes about 3 km upstream to the Kiekebuscher Weir, which promises a little adventure for real paddling fans. For many, paddling on the Spree is a sporting experience that stimulates body and mind at the same time.
Sports and health
The city administration has recognized how important sport is for the health, well-being and social integration of citizens. Around 25% of Cottbus's population are already organized in sports clubs - one of the highest rates in Brandenburg. Future projects are intended to further improve the quality of stay on the Spree, including the repair of a defective jetty that is particularly used by water hikers. Sports offerings such as the SpreeMeile and SportBoxen have already borne fruit and show that the city cares about its river and the leisure activities associated with it.
Stand-up paddling, which is also very popular in flowing waters like the Spree, offers a unique opportunity to experience nature from a new perspective. As the adventurer Pascal Rösler reports, who paddled an impressive 2,467 km from Munich to the Black Sea, this experience is not only physically challenging, but can also be understood as a meditative break. Paddling on the Spree is “like running on water” and promises a special interaction with nature, as the Bergwelten website describes.
Outlook for the future
With this newly planned rental station, which is under the auspices of the federal program “Sustainable inner cities and centers”, Cottbus is showing that it has a good hand for the future. There are already several projects being planned to meet the needs of citizens and at the same time make the river a vibrant living space for everyone. Among the informal sports offerings, the Spree is increasingly seen as a hotspot in the sports and leisure sector.
