On Sunday evening, June 18, 2025, there was a large crowd at the German Football Museum in Dortmund because the draw for the first round of the DFB Cup was on the agenda. Eagerly anticipated, the ceremony began at 5:50 p.m., led by lottery ticket winner Owen Ansah, the first German to run the 100 meters under ten seconds. At his side was DFB Vice President Peter Frymuth, who led the draw.
A total of 64 clubs took part in the draw, with the teams from the first draw pot - including amateur and professional clubs - gaining home advantage. Defending champions VfB Stuttgart, who beat Arminia Bielefeld 4-2 in the final last year, will not enter the competition with Bayern until August 26 or 27, 2025, as both teams fight for the Franz Beckenbauer Cup on August 16.
Exciting encounters in the first round
The clash between Bayern Munich and third division team SV Wehen Wiesbaden is certainly one of the highlights of the first round. Borussia Dortmund will also compete against Rot-Weiss Essen in a NRW duel. Here are other exciting matchups fans can expect:

The first games will take place between August 15 and 18, 2025, with the exception of the games between VfB Stuttgart and FC Bayern, which, as already mentioned, will be rescheduled at a later date. The entire draw included both amateur clubs and 18 Bundesliga clubs as well as 14 best-placed teams from the 2nd Bundesliga.
A look into the future
The further dates in the DFB Cup have already been set. The second main round will be played on October 28th and 29th, 2025, followed by the round of 16 on December 2nd and 3rd, 2025. There is already great anticipation for the quarter-final games on February 3rd and 4th and on February 10th and 11th, 2026.
